Put this pump on at weekend past. Was second hand but promised me it ran fine or I could take back. I collected from sellers house.

Does not respond to accelerator. It starts off starter motor and runs at fast idle belching smoke out exhaust.

Obviously I feel like a twit but I'm not interested in that I'm just wondering if anyone has had this problem and a refurbishment has been successful?

By refurbished I mean sent to a pro to be done right as I am keeping this vehicle.
 
It would help to know which engine it is fitted to. I would take it for a specialist for an overhaul as a matter of course. It wouldn't hurt to get your injectors serviced while you're at it.
 
No disrespect but is it installed and setup correctly? If the timing is out it will behave weirdly

I would suggest that there is something not right, the fact you went to a guys door and he sold you it as a working pump, I could be wrong, but I would like to think it does run. The lack of response from the throttle is odd...

What was wrong with your old pump?

It could be hideously bad timing. How easily does it start? Was the belt and pulley locked in place with the pump tool or did you do this by taking the timing belt off and re-timing after the new pump went in?
 
Take out the stop solenoid ad make sure there's no swarf in there, if so it needs refurbished. If it needs done I'd try to get my money back, and get your old one refurbished. As said, make sure it's timed up correctly. Mine didn't run well after it was refurbished so I emailed the refurbisher and he advised me to turn the pump slightly anticlockwise to retard the timing, and it worked perfectly. If you still can't get it running right you can have it tested to see if it needs refurbished. Mine was done by Diesel Bob: http://www.dieselbob.co.uk/

Diesel Bob is where the old pump is going - it developed a leak between cast iron part and alloy part.

The timing was done to a professional standard. It was all locked in place with pins, engine rotated twice to make a full revolution of cam, then all checked against marks.

It starts OK, just runs like a ship on one speed.


Will be interesting to see if the old pump can be fixed.

Sounds like on your original pump it was only the distributor head "O" ring seal, that can be replaced without removing the pump from the engine, about 1 hours work, I have just done one on my 300Tdi Disco "O' ring costs about $5.00Au,so cheap as. Contact Biketeacherdave on the forum, super helpful guy.
