Hi All,

Sometimes when pulling away in 1st gear, when i reach the biting point of the clutch and my defender moves forward there is a clunk which sounds like its coming from below where the clutch pedal is positioned, i was wondering what people think it might be, i was thinking my gearbox is on the road out or UJ's need replacing?

My defender is a 1995 110 running a R380 gearbox with 142,300 miles on the clock

Having just had a similar problem, my vote goes for UJ's on prop shaft! Looks like the bearings disintegrated long time ago, metal on metal for some time. Easy to check.

Are they easy changed (I.E. can i do the job over a weekend)?
 
Yep, easy to change, also check for play on the prop shaft splines, again easy to check. (I have that problem too!) Just get under and have a look, check for play on both propshafts, just rotate back and forward by hand and you will soon see if there is any play and where it comes from. If all tight, then your problems lie elsewhere :D
 
It could also be the input gear on the T-Box. Not sure if R380's had cross-drilled shaft to T-Box, but i know on LT77's they weren't causing oil starvation. Sure enough mine was totally ruined (admittedly it had been clunking for about 20k miles). When it was replaced all clunking went away. If that's no use, my other guess would be UJ's.
