Hi, newbie hear! I've had my P38 4.6 petrol auto for a little while now and everything seemed fine. Anyway the other day there was a bit of a slow speed clunk and judder from under the car. I was some way from home and the car continued to drive but there was a constant noise from under the car, definatley a rotational noise that reduced as speed slowed. I got home, checked under the car and all looked ok. No play in the wheels/bearings etc. The rear prop shaft was solid with no play, but the front prop shaft has a lot of play for and aft and up and down especialy where it enters the front axle. I don't have any manuals at the moment so cant see an exploded diagram. My question I suppose is, will new uj's sort the problem or will I need to look deeper into where the shaft enters the front axle???? I hope I've explained it properly! As I said I'm a newb to P38's and 4x4's so any help/advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot in advance. Cheers Paul

:welcome2:mate.UJ are probbaly wots cuasuing it and not terribly difficult for a diy fix and reasonably cheap too. have a read of this, is for a defender but the process is pretty similar http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f41/uj-renewal-59812.html

Thanks for your help. On closer inspection it appears that all the play is where the forward uj bolts onto the flange on the front axle, ie the play is not in the uj, but on the shaft that goes into the front axle! Does anybody know if this is an easy fix or tricky or is it a replacement axle job??:(

Fantastic! Thanks for that. Looks like I'll be spending some time under the car! Do you know a good place to get the replacement bearings?

Thanks for all your help. Got a complete diff overhaul kit (4 bearings and oil seal) from Ashcroft transmissions. Thanks for all the advice too, the input shaft wobbles about in the front diff so is definatley the culprit! Just need to get it all to bits now!

Have a good look at the ujs on the props too.For the money itll be an easy pre emtive fix and only takes about an hour.

Got the hub and drive shafts out, the spline drive had sheared off the nearside drive shaft!!! That'd explain the racket from the front diff!! I drained the oil out of the front diff, all 200ml or so of it!! Only a litre and a half short!! I've got a replacement drive shaft so no problems there and a complete front diff bearing kit. My massive problem at the minute is I've got the diff in bits and the input shaft bearing that should just lift off, is completly shot and worse still it appears to have welded itself to the input shaft so I can't remove the shaft from the diff housing. Anyone out there have any ideas, I've obviously been clouting it fairly hard already but can't get it to budge! Thanks for any advice in advance!!
