Hi Geof, it does sound like your callipers are a bit worn which is not at all unusual, but before you spend the money on new ones, try some new LR pads first.
I had this and like you went through everything. Turned out to be a loose nut securing the pinion in the differential. So if, with the prop off, you can wiggle the pinion side to side and up and down, that might be it. I thought it was worn bearings so bought new ones! Still got 'em!sorry a REVIVAL . Although mines a DEF i have a slight clunk , just fitted new stubs , bearings , swivel bearings , discs , calipers and mintex pads . Im sure it was not there before , ive not done enough miles for anything to of come loose . I did re-adjust the wheel bearings just in case .
Its if you roll to a stop and brake hard , brake slowly and it seems ok .
Interested in what was said about the back pads ?? . And James you have got me thinking if i have an apple flying around or some metal object .
well well , i liquid wrenched oiled the front spring seat's + tops , shoved the secured trolley jack a bit + axle stands , moved the jack handles but all seemed to be fine and secure (there temp home whilst still working) Shunted it back and to and NO clunk . ... No idea , i can only guess all the jacking it up un-settled the springs and a bit of lube let them move back in place ... NO APPLES LOL
