Hi all
I'm looking to buy a 95/98 my discovery manual but I'm just wondering how much difference there is between the 2nd and 3rd edition. I have chance of a 2nd edition but wondering if I'm better off paying more and getting the 3rd, I plan on using it to do my Lt230 at some point if not more but I have no experience of the manuals, I notice that some seem to list more contents on the cover

Or to put it another way which is the best one to have

Any help or advice muchly appreciated

Rave is the second edition,

If it was me, I would get the third edition as long as it covers the enigne you have.

I aim on getting an actual book type manual rather than cd or download and I think, well I hope the 2in the pics are not cd, they better not be for the price

I’m just very wary of buying anything off the internet because of fakes and con artists, plus my lack of experience doing it, I much prefer the good old method of going into a shop and seeing wot your buying

The two publications you show are reprints of various LR manuals including the NAS spec disco i.e 3.9 4.0 4.2 4.6 from Auto Books or something similar.

So are they a newer version of the one you put a link up for, so its all that manual with the overhauls in there aswell. It's just that I've been thru the one you kindly showed me but there is no part for rebuilding engines, gearboxes and T boxes which I thought there would be, I did think it would contain a lot more than it does. I just want to buy once and buy right ha

The original workshop sold by Land Rover was intended for qualified motor mechanics and the experienced DIY mechanic in the days before reprints and online copies, therefore there’s not a lot on the work involved stripping/rebuilding engines, gearboxes etc etc.
If you want engine rebuild then the Haynes manual may help u and then use the LR as a reference and knowledge on the workings of the various systems, precautions and advice it gives and the data provided such as torque settings etc etc.
 
I've got the genuine LR 90 and 110 manuals, and I have RAVE. IMHO RAVE is the better of the two, especially when combined with forum access. Print what you want for a given job - as often as you want anorl ....:)

Given the risk of spending money on something on the interweb, I tend not to bother spending more than £teens on something "speculative" - I have the genuine manuals for our tractors bought off fleabay, on CD, but they were only something like £10.99 each - so not much of a risk....;)
 
The Land Rover workshop manuals address the technical side of things, the Haynes is useful as a procedure guide but often lacks the technical details or diagrams. Don't forget the parts book too. I've got one for the Defender 87-06 and I use it more than the manuals. The exploded diagrams are very useful as they show how things go together. Say you've got a spacer, a shim a seal and a cup-shaped washer and can't remember what order they're supposed to go and what direction the cup is supposed to face. The parts book is great for things like that, because all the details are there. The pictures are a bit small and sometimes at my age I find I need a magnifying glass, but it's really useful. Plus you know the part number for everything. Some have been superseded of course, but it at least tells you how to start looking.

Where are you I've got the 200 and 300 tdi versions 8n the shed you can have. Can't be dealing with postage etc so Don, t ask but you're welcome to come and pick them up if you're ever near Wisbech.

Ok so an update...turns out I’ve been bought one of the manuals I mentioned above for Xmas but it wasn’t mentioned till I said it might not be wot I thought. So the missus gives me it (the manual that is) and sure enough there is the work shop manual followed by the v8 overhaul manuals, and at the end there is the lt230q overhaul manual. BUT...between the v8 and lt230q parts there is meant to be the 300tdi, r380 and lt230t overhaul manuals (basically wot neilly put a link up for) but all there is in there is a repeat of the first pages of the main manual covering specs and general info. Not amused and was why I was going off the idea since speaking to you guys but I think il compare this to the Haynes and see if it's worth keep g anyway or not and go from there

So is rave basically the online version of the workshop manual with all rebuild info aswell?

I agree with you. My 22 year old copy of the Haynes manual for the D1 does it for me, and later when I found that LRs Rave was on line I of course had to have a look see... that’s about it. :D
