Hi all, i have a leaky landy, and before you all jump on me saying thats normal, i would just like to point out that if leaks can be cured imho i think they should be.
The landy was in recently for an MOT which it passed but with several advisories which included an oil leak in the engine bay.
I got the garage to identify where the leaks were and this is the list:
Rocker Cover gasket
Sump gasket
Lower engine strengthener
Vacuum pump gasket

Now they say the leaks present are not a problem for a vehicle of the age ( around 1984 ) but the two most serious ones are the sump and the Lower engine strengthener and these would cost around £1080 to sort. What i dont know is this realistic price as i dont have a clue about the engine strengther or what is does etc.

Can the other items be attacked easily at home or is it worth getting them sorted at the same time?

Any thoughts or advise much appreciated

What do you mean by lower engine strengthener?
You can do an entire engine swap for half that price as well
 
a grand????? to chance a few simple gaskets???? i also don't know what the engine strengthener is
 
If I was you , I would be asking where the lower engine strengthener is? once you have done this take a photo and post it back here.

Rocker gasket and vac pump should be easy and cheap.
Sump gasket should not be that difficult, depends on what you need to remove to get at it.

Don't know what the Lower engine strengthener is either, but I do know that I think you are being had over a barrel at that price.

( an internet search showed up an "engine strengthener plate" for a Velocette, so this hardly seems relevant to your LR )

sump gasket can be a messy job, but a grand buys a lot of soap!!

Which engine are we talking about here?
 
It'll be the ladder frame.
And the extra cash will be for training a raw idiot in the highly technical art of bolt-undoing :rolleyes:
 
That is far too expensive!! Rocker cover is easy, £15 off ebay and about 30 mins to fit.

Cant comment on the rest but equally never heard of an engine strengthener bracket....
 
Engine strengthener will be ladder frame I assume, although no mention of what engine and I know on the 200tdi the gearbox needs to be removed to take it off as it bolts through the flywheel housing.
A lot of time/money and work for an oil leek, if I was going that far in-depth I think I would be pulling the engine and doing a little rebuild while I was at it.
 
You don't have a sump gasket on a 200 it is sealed with a sealant (funny that eh!). That said, you can buy a cork aftermarket gasket but its not a standard item for the 200. Best bet is to clean the whole underside with gunk or similar and jetwash all the oil residue off. Start it up and look for leaks (go for a gentle drive so not to blow any leaking oil around). I was at the point of resealing my sump (300) due to a leak but actually identified it as a loose oil filter (had been on for a couple of thousand before it leaked). Tweaked it up and its back to being leak free again.
 
Hi all,
I have no idea what an engine strengther is which was one of the reasons for the post. I forgot to include the engine was a transfer from a Disco 200tdi. The work is being quoted by Keith Gotts but i will be talking to them tomorrow to find out exactly what is entailed as it does sound a bit expensive unle the like of the gear box etc needs removing etc.

With the engine rebuild in mind does anyone know of anyone closer to Portsmouth that would be capable of doing this without ripping us off?? Thanks

that price is ridiculous,is the leak leaving a puddle when parked ?
 
It leaves a small 30-50 wet stain after parking up James, not a lot i know but i would like to get all the leaks sorted if possible especially as they are comming up as advisories on the reccent MOT. Seemed worth getting done with the car already up at Keith Gotts but the price did seem prety high for what seemed to be mainly the sump & engine strengthener (whatever that is ).
 
i doubt youll cure them a 100% but this is ladder frame it sits between sump and block,though generally leaks are at rear and require g/box off, id fit a new rocker cover gasket (easy job) then see how it goes

Engine strengthener? I'm lost as well.
The price sounds ridiculous and it's only an advisory anyway, just pick up the bits you need and change them when you have some spare time!
 
Will have to have a chat tomorrow with them, not much point getting the work done if it does not cure it 100% though!!
 
Land Rovers don't leak oil, if they do they are broke and need fixing.

Its not cheap but worth every penny, my TD is as dry as a bone and they like to blow oil out of every possible orifice. When I was a spanner monkey at a local garage we wouldn't use anything else and nothing ever came back with a failed gasket.
