hi guys. thought I'd change gearbox and ird oil trying to source an annoying mouse. Gearbox oil came out like crystal clear honey-ird oil came out lovely too-no fragments on drain plug, just a few odd tiny sparkly pigments in oil as you'd expect (81k mile TD4, 2003).
changed them both for new fluids-still got noise. sounds like a high pitch woo followed by slightly lower pitch woo...WOO woo WOO woo..at a constant engine speed! drive shafts seem tight-new viscous coupling and genuine bearings along with new diff a few months ago. if I let off gas just a tiny amount the noise disappears-on the gas a touch and it comes back. Sounds like coming from IRD area. wheel bearings seem tight..I'm flummoxed!
 
rear diff wines a bit at 75mph only really. yes manual getrag box.
the noise is so sensitive to a constant speed that when I alter the speed/loading on drive train by simply lifting my foot a gnats cock it goes-so yes, depressing clutch also gets rid of noise.
 
Have you had it from new? Any chance clutch has been changed but not the clutch release bearing? That was the case with mine - previous owner had a cheap(!?) job done - just clutch changed - release assembly then failed - not the bearing though but the slave - however it's possible for release to fail due to new clutch mating.
 
doe's it sound like a duck . . . .as uncle Willo had that for ages, think he modified the pipe going to the egr valve. . . . . .:)
 
got an egr bypass on and vac tube blocked off. turbo sounds a sweet whistle when I put on revs. it's kind that high wine noise you get if you stick it in a lower gear when coasting to a stop but slightly oscillating.
had truck a year-no history of clutch change... I have done fluid drain and master cylinder myself previously. not sure on release bearing a I can't keep noise going long enough to depress clutch and notice a change..the tiniest of movement off the throttle and it goes away!

have the same noise on mine at 50 55 mph back of slightly on pedal and noise goes .noise been there for over ayear now also had new clutch,flywheel and release bearing for different problem but the noise is still there.cant tell if its ird or gearbox bearing but noise hasnt got any worse,but i can say i cant hear it now after fitting insa turbo dakar tyres for the winter:eek::blabla: sorry cant hear you:eek:

Noise changes upon applying power or releasing throttle. I can get it to woo WOO woo WOO too, buy driving on level ground with the throttle is steady. Mine started after the auto gearbox was replaced, but we're cetain it's the ird doing it. Happens with engine off and auto in neutral whilst driving (that can/will damage yer auto so don't try it) and when it's on my free wheel lift. If I remove the props/vcu it goes away. Thats because we think the props etc amplify the noise coming off the ird. Perhaps remove your props/vcu to test this on yours. Had the squeal for the last 17000 miles... :(

Hi my oldtruck makes all sorts of noises ......... woo woo is definately diff on mine ..... you can with very slight throttle movement play a tune on it...... I would bet it is diff. I am on my 3rd ird (this is a long storey)...... and they all make noises ..... if bad you get a wheel bearing eee noise with gindy after effects....... you will know all about it. Just make sure all your tyres are the same with even wear... and have a good VCU....

Just a thought if the diff bushes are a bit weak.......this could induce an off centre drive and cause noise.....possibly (clutching at straws here)
 
I brought a new diff 4months ago and fitted it with 3brand new bushes. diff was quite tight and wined at 75mpg from new. you guys reckon it's the diff then maybe? preload from factory a bit iffy?
 
if I knew of a decent diff or gears man around me I'd Gladly offer the going rate for a new crush washer and preload setup on it!!
 
Can overhaul the diffs with a couple of pinion bearings and a collapsible washer. Setup the preload and jobs a good'en.

The rave gives a good indication that its straightforward...but I own no rotational torque device etc...just a simple torque wrench.
Can you set them up on the vehicle - or as it states does the diff indeed need its driveshafts disconnected to achieve optimum torque on the crush washer? Im in Kings Lynn Norfolk Vissie - you?
