Hi I'm new on here so pls bare with me.
I have a 2003 range rover vogue td. The last few days I have had problems starting it
But when started it ran spot on all day long but following morning same again . This morning it won't start at all so called RAC Out to it and he put it on the computer and nothing came up.He checked the fuel from filter and said that was fine and very good pressure. He said he thinks it could be the fuel regulator switch. So I have now had it sent to our local garage and he said the RAC mans wrong and it could be a faulty injector. Could any one help please ad I think these people don't know what's wrong and I'm going to end up playing the elimination game at my expense. Many thanks Mark.

Diagnostics must show it up !

If they haven't got the compatable diagnostics equipment it might not show up the faults

+1...

Land Rover products use bespoke protocols for the majority of the ECU interfaces....that being said the engine management by law has to be OBDII compliant, so even a generic reader should pull some info from the EMS...

You say there is good fuel pressure, and also if it is just AN injector fault, it should still run on the other 5 cylinders albeit a bit rough...

With a Diesel the only things that stop it starting are lack of fuel and Lack of Heat/Compression.

The TD6 should start without glow plugs again albeit a bit strained...but should start...

So that leaves lack of fuel or lack of compression...

The most common fail item on the Diesel Fuel system is the secondary tank pump which is located on the outside of the fuel tank under a small flap...listen to see if you can hear it running...that plus the main In Tank Lift Pump...

If there was an injector fault it would show up on Diagnostics....a faulty fuel pump may not.

Not to clued up on the TD6, but the V8 has a schreider type valve on the fuel rail for testing fuel pressure, if the TD6 has one, crank over the engine and then press the schreider valve in and see if you get good strong fuel pressure...if not suspect pump or pressure regulator!

As saint said listen for both fuel pumps working ,one is under Neath rear seat on drivers side, the other just in front of rear wheel passenger side, under Neath you can take the 2 bolts out of cover and feel to see if its working, next I would be doing a leak off test to check injectors.if you take the air intake off at just befor the filter ,have someone crank it over and spray little amounts of wd40 in,and see if it fires up,if it does its lack of fuel pressure while cranking, don't over do it on the wd40 or can hydraulic lock the engine, use wd40 instead of easy start not as harsh on engine.the most likely cause will be an injector or 2 leaking back too much fuel, once it runs the fuel pumps supply enough fuel to keep it running,it's just the starting it up,also too slow cranking speed may also cause similar probs so make sure your battery is 100%

Low cranking speed combined with duff glow plugs will also cause failure to start. My bet is with the pump as others have said. Deffo not an injector.

Many thanks for your advise . It is now with the garage ,they burnt out my starter motor so new one been fitted tomorrow. Then he can start and look for the problem but will relay your advise to him first thing in the morning. This is our first range rover always had freelander,s and had no problems with them. We are in uncharterd waters with it but if anyone can tell me what to keep an eye on please. We love it though bit pricey to run round town but we think its not bad on a long run. Again many thanks and will let you know what the out come is..
