Got a 97 Disco that has started playing up in the last week.

It began by the engine not stopping when the key was turned off - had to stall it - then all OK for a few days.

Now it struggles starting - about 15 turns before it fires up when cold - when it is warm everything is OK. Still got the stopping problem now and then except it stops if you turn off the key and try and rev the engine.

Injection pump? Any help is much appreciated.

if it's got the 300TDi engine in it it'l probably be a sticky fuel shut off solenoid, attached to the IP

first of all check to see if you do have a 300Tdi in it - some geek will be along shortly to say ya or nah

the solenoid will have a single wire attached to it, looking at the engine from the front it will be on the left about half way down

It won't be the wire as you would find your self stalling as it looses power and cuts the fuel, more likely to be the solenoid. Never looked at it myselfe but probably some kind of washer in there soewhere, maybe need replacing.

Inside the solenoid is a small plunger and spring. The plunger sometimes has a rubber washer on it. When ignition is on the solenoid (think electromagentic)the plunge is pulled upwards against the pressure of the spring allowing fuel through.

Ignition off and the plunger returns with spring assistance to stop fuel flow. If the plunger sticks when switching the ignition on then it will not allow fuel through so it will not start.

And if the plunger is stuck in the up position the engine will not stop.

It is not unknown for the rubber washer to become semi detached and cause the problems you mention.

got to start there methinks?

regards

Dave

look for small metal shard on the plunger as this is first signs of the pump breaking down inside, also you dont always have to replace the solinoid some time just cleaning it can work :)
