Hi, not been on the forum for a while. Car had been running very well! But today I tried changing the diesel filter and now the car will not start. Freelander is a 1 version made in 2003. I've tried the following.

-Letting the wheel arch pump run four times. Each time till ECU turns off the pump. After the fourth attempt tried cranking.

-opening up a pipe from the fuel line rail to see if there is fuel running to engine which it is when priming the fuel pump under wheel.

-losening sediment filter plug to check for air?

-Cranking engine for over 30 secs several times. Now flattened battery.

So, when the low pressure pump starts there is a little gurgling sound and a change of tone which suggests there is air in the system. How do you get this air out? Its a nightmare trying to get this working. A thread on here suggested taking off the return line but where from?

I also cleaned the inlet manifold. Did I put the fuel line rail sensor plug on the right way? The push button on the top?

I'm pulling my hair out over this. Many thanks. Shaun

HI,

Not sure if it is the same on the Freelander,

Had a similar issue on the D2 td5, found the HP side of the fuel tank pump had died. LP side was OK.

Cheers

I’m fairly sure the rail sensor plug only goes on one way, but you don’t need to remove it to clean the manifold. Did you do any other jobs? Is the cam sensor plugged in?

The Td4 self-primes, so no need to fill anything up.

Is the fuel filter the right way around? You may need to re-trace all your steps.

Finally, what brand of filter? Some cheaper ones have been known to collapse internally and block fuel flow.

How much fuel is spewing out at the HP pump? It will gush out as it's at over 50Psi. If it's just a trickle, then something isn't right with the filter installation.
Are you sure everything is plugged back in correctly, as it sounds like something has been missed or damaged by the strip down.

When I turn the key so the LP is just on the LP motor sprays out diesel out of the injector pipe when the nut is undone a little . I've got a lot of deisel sitting on the cam cover now and under the car from the amount of times priming and loosening an injector pipe. I've even tried with it when cranking. But ceased doing that the HP runs at high pressure and fuel rail sensor needs to see HP.

I shall revisit it tomorrow morning . Trying priming several times once the battery is recharged . It's doing my head in.

When you say I tried changing the fuel filter did you succeed, and if so was the replacement put in the right way round it should have flow wrote on it and an arrow, make sure all the fuel lines are pushed home properly. remove the fuel line rail sensor plug and give it a spray with contact cleaner and plug it back in.

Hi, yes I made sure the filter was the right way . On the black plastic casing there is an arrow and an arrow on the filter and also the word out.

Would a Synergy module cause problems starting? Thats what I have installed

I don’t know anything about them sorry but can’t you take it off so it’s stock and see what it does?

Synergy box shouldn't make any difference. But turn it off and try. Have you tried pressing the cut off switch on the bulk head?

Was the synergy new? It could be faulty if it's second hand and been damaged. Remove the synergy plugs and return it to original to see if that cures the non start problem.

Also have you made sure the MAF plug is fitted the correct way round?

Synergy was brand new . I've removed it and still it won't start . I've tried priming the pump several times and took off the return feed at the tank and diesel came through.

It's crazy to think all I did was change the diesel filter and clean the intake manifold plus all new filters and oil .

Try disconnecting the MAF and giving the rail fuel pressure solenoid wire connector a wiggle and make sure its properly seated. Follow the wires around the engine to make sure none of them have been inadvertently damages during your work in the engine bay - I wouldn't diss that suggestion, people have been amazed they have done such things in the past!

I will take off the manifold and have a look at all plugs and wiring when I get the chance .

Does the engine management light supposed to go out after a few secs after turning key into position II?

only once the engine is running I think.
