You say it selects 3rd and reverse in Low but not Hi,

Does it drive in LOW range in 3rd and reverse?

Cheers

Yeah so it selects and drivable in every gear in low but in high its as if the gear knob doesnt push into the gate?

I'd say change the oil and filter before anything else if you know it's old... a good practice is to change the oil once, drive it for half an hour to make it change through all gears many times then change it again with the filter, then you'll have about 75% renewed oil in it, a simple oil change will be max 50% new oil

EDIT: disregard this post i've had a mental hiccup

read on another forum about the gear selector can drupe or something so gets in the way on gates?
not sure tho

I am confused, as to how the ALL the gears in the gear box can be selected in LOW range but not in HI Range.

Cheers

It lists the vehicles it includes on each.
So as you have a discovery1 I would think Disc 3 would be good.

I'm a bit confused about that too. The gearbox and transfer box are to all intents and purposes two separate units. So I cant see how one can affect the other in this manner, unless there's something going on with a loose or worn component near the two selector levers in the transmission tunnel where the levers live.
