Got two 15 Y/Os thinking would old Land Rovers be insurable.

Tempted by one of the following as a restoration.

SIII 109 Petrol
Very early 110

or a Forwards Control, no idea why they just appeal.

Any advice please?
 
Sounds like an ideal way for teenagers to learn about cars and car maintenance. And with a bit of luck, have something nice to drive once they've passed their tests in a couple of years time. I think it's an excellent idea. Keeps family relationships strong and good natured too.
 
My 20 year old keeps on at me to get on my landy insurance. The combination of a ton of vehicle and a testosterone twenty year old isn't something I'm convinced about. I've got limited mileage insurance but not keen to unleash him yet. If they get involved in the restoration they wil apprecaite the vehicle for what it is. Maybe an excuse to buy another landy! Why the LWB versions? Wouldn't a SWB or 90 be more fun?

Well they seem to be cheaper and I like the balance of the styling on the 109, 88 looks a bit short.

But one of the best things is you can make it your own car, not a clone of everyone elses.
 
You might be surprised by the insurance. Because most 17 year olds end up with a little hatchback of some sort, I think they're deemed to be a higher risk vehicle (aren't statistics wonderful) and prices get inflated as a result. Something unconventional can sometimes work out cheaper (relatively speaking). The fact that an old series is very much not a typical 'boy racer' vehicle might work in your favour.

I'd go for a 109. Right now everyone is after defenders (or 90/110) as production is ending, so a series would probably work out cheaper. Doing the restoration now would be a great project- good for learning skills and they get something to drive that you know is in good order.

I would try driving a 109 for a bit first, that aren't vey manouvereble, turning circle is terrible. 88 wasn't too short too stop millions being built and sold! :)

I think hot hatches do actually result in a lot of insurance claims! :confused:
 
109 better , as power to weight less than 88 , also if they drive it fast and get into trouble things happen a bit slower in a 109 , 88 can be twitchy . Get Van or pickup , not SW (less seats lower premium)
