Just been looking what sort of range rover I can get for £10,000

And the answer, a lot of car for your money, A 2005 vogue td6 with all the extras and only a 100,000 on the clock.

Makes me wonder why I want a drafty old bone shaker of a defender for the same price.

I've seen the same thing said a few times of late, but as above, completely different vehicles, buy what suits you.

That range rover will do a lot of the stuff a defender can do. Don't get me wrong I love my defender, but I bought it for a trip across India. if I had 10K to spend now and I wasn't planning leaving Europe I'd get the range rover.

My neighbour has a l322, oil slick on drive the size of te car after about 1 month of ownership. So he can afford the car, just can't afford to fix it.

How very true, posh cars on the drive and no food in the cupboards
Mate I know bought a newish bmw, can he afford to maintain it? can he chuff! he doesn't even service it.

Champagne lifestyle on lemonade money.
See how ****ed off when you explain the new car on finance isn't theirs and has depreciated like a stone.
Having 10 or so vehicles-all I own

Haha, very true, people tend to get ****y about it and not like it, nor can they grasp the concept.
'Least it's better than your crappy landrover' is the usual reply.
But at least mine are paid for and not on borrowed money and losing a fortune on it every year.

Yep, but that is social climbers- all bs and nothing to back it up

Give me my old Defender everytime. I can't give you a rational answer as to why, I just love the basicness of it!!! :D

When the range rover's headlight breaks and a used part is about 100 quid, vs the same thing happening to the defender, and 10 quid from a breakers.

Or one of the hundreds of sensors, or ECUs goes tits up on the range rover.

Or the wing mirror gets knocked off and it costs a fortune for a new one.

Or it needs a small job doing and you have to pay a garage to do it, just so they can reset the computer with their gadget.

A 10 grand defender will last you year after year, and when things do go wrong they'll be a fair bit cheaper to fix.
A 10 grand range rover will go wrong year after year, and when things don't go wrong for a little while, you'll be saving up for when they inevitably do.

So true!

I had the same dilemma, ended up getting an 'old' LR90 (1987) for a couple of grand, spent money getting cam belt etc done. Use and abuse it (to an extent) and spend hours just messing around with it. Anything that goes wrong with the electrickery is either wire/switch/relay/fuse and is easily resolved. To me its like a big Mecano set, hours of enjoyment both on road and offered......and my Mrs is happy, i'm out of her hair fiddling with the landy.....win win situation :)

Like many replies depends on what you need. A defender once broken can be repaired and depending on budget parts can cost from peanuts for ****part up to genuine parts at a price all depends on budget.

Mines simple to fix with the use of the Haynes book of lies or the knowledge gained from on here or Landrover tv on you tube (saved me a few bob like).

Don't get me wrong whilst based in Germay I had a M5 for the driving the autobahns and I miss the car but not the running costs!
