So I just put my central console back - connected all wires correctly and screwed the last screw (following a lot of de rusting and sound proofing) - turn the engine on, move into D….nothing happens, put foot down harder, lovely revs no movement. Switch to R no movement, switch to 321 no movement. Just revs. No warning lights. No odd engine noises. Put it back into P and THEN there is this odd clicking noise from the gear stick housing. Turned the car on and off, tried the same, literally same thing happened.

NB - I had had the hand brake disconnected for maybe a month or 2 whilst doing this interior renovations / could that be related?
The only thing different to this start and the last successful one was that the handbrake was connected.

It sounds VERY much like the transfer is in N. The clicking when you put it in P, means the trans is driving as expected, and the Park pawl is trying to engage as the output on the trans is spinning the output.

Try shifting the transfer into low and try, then shift back into high and see it if works.

Easily done when removing/replacing the console & often easy to overlook the obvious.:)

ETA kermit said it should show on the dash.
I don't know if that's the case as mine's a Classic & doesn't have lights to show what gear you're in in either main or transfer.
