i bought some cheap round spot lights for my disco roofrack, been fitted for a while so decided to wire them up..
they have a halo light which comes on with side lights, and a main beam,i have wired them into side lights and into main beam,i just spliced them into the appropiate wires,
will this be ok leaving it like this or will it need a relay.. also would it melt the wiring if left without a relay

You should be using a relay for the roof lights powered straight from the battery.
The relay "activation" power can come from your full beam wiring ;)

relays is the way to go...

ask defender11069 about his fusebox fire last week when he first used his new light bar!!

he has now moved his fire extinguisher from the rear of his 90 , to the cab... lol...

and redone the wiring with an auxilliary fuse box.. lol

Definitely need a relay, pretty straight forward to do, but spliced is not good.
Diagrams are all on here somewhere. Personally I'd use a relay for the halo circuit too, but them I'm over cautious

Dont forget to use an inline fuse as well of the correct value. Try and get it within 6 inches of the battery if you can.

FYI - 2x55w spots will draw around 9-10A so i would use a 15A for a pair or a 25A for 4 :)

Make sure the cable is well within this range as well :) (including the earth)

Sorry for the hijack but I have fitted a set of spots to my Disco. I could only get 130w bulbs for them. So I have 2 x 130w 12v bulbs which from my calculations (Amps = Watts / Volts) is 21.6amps. I have it on a 25 amp fuse. I guess I need to re-wire the lamps as I don't think the wire is thick enough. What wire should I use?

Relay is connected to battery with thick wire. Its a 30amp relay. Then off the relay with thickish wire and then it goes to a piggyback spade connector where 2 separate wires go off to the spots. So in theory the wires to the spots only need to be half of the total amperage (12amp ish). I don't want to get too bulky with the wires.
