Guys and lady’s, I purchased a new 7pin trailer harness years ago as the original one on my 2005 defender was looking a bit worse for ware where you flip the flap to put the trailer socket in and the new one has been great but the old one had the purple wire which I could use as an extra positive cable to run up into the rear for extra lighting.. still have the old 7pin harness was thinking of putting a new plug on that one but the issue is there is like 13 wires going into the rear of the 7pin plug and the sockets on eBay etc only have 7 pins on the back, is it like a special plug or something, sorry if this is a dumb post but I’m confused as hell

Is it ex military

Euro trailer plugs have 13 wires too, maybe the trailer was set up for that and someone's changed it to 7pin plug for their car

The 13-pin socket replaces the old black and grey sockets in a single connector. If all the wires are there, you're better off just installing the 13-pin socket rather than messing around trying to insulate the unused connections. A simple plug-in adapter will convert it to a black 7-pin socket for an older trailer, and you can get a splitter cable which gives you both sockets for an older caravan.

Sorry for the confusion guys it’s not a 13pin tow plug it’s a 7 pin, but there is about 13 wires going into the back of the 7 pin which is a bit confusing

I reckon so. My assumption is it originally had a 13-pin socket, previous owner for some strange reason decided to rewire it to a single 7-pin rather than plugging in an adapter like a sensible person. Refitting a 13-pin socket would be the simplest and neatest way of terminating the currently unused wires.

Thanks everyone I had a better look and there is only 7 wires going into the back so silly me!

Can anyone recommend a decent 7 pin socket, there is loads around but would rather get a decent one?
