Hello all - my wipers are working fine except on the fastest speed, when they're not doing anything at all. Could this be a fuse? I have a 12 year old TD5. Won't be able to get to them until the weekend but would like to be prepared. Thanks for your help.

Based on my experience, there are two things that could cause this. One is the switch - maybe it's not making contact in the 'fast' position. The other is the control unit (well, people call it a relay, but it's a lot more than that as there are printed circuit boards inside too). Replacing these items has made the biggest difference to my wipers' reliability and versatility across the full range of wiping activities.

Hi Brown thanks for yr reply. Is that the 'park switch'?

Sounds like your park switch is OK, as you haven't mentioned the wipers stopping halfway across the screen. What I have found is that the stalk switches sometimes don't make contact terribly well in some of the positions. I had one a while ago that would only make the intermittent function work if you jiggled it, for example. I think the contacts are embedded in plastic and with the heating effect of current flowing it goes soft and they don't make good contact any more. Something similar can happen to the light switch on the other side of the steering column too.

I'm not saying this is definitely your problem but it sounds like it might be a useful working hypothesis.

OK thank you. :)

When my wipers played up it was the contacts in the stalk switch. I ended up just giving the switch a good clean with contact cleaner and all was well again.
