i'm am 100% crap with electronics.
92 defender.
as you may know down on wiper stalk is for imtermitent, up 1 is on and up 2 is wipe so fast that they fly off the edge of the windscreen.

if i go down then wiper are not imtermitent and are more like up 1 speed.
up 1 and up 2 are normal. however wipers do not park.
any suggestions fellas? (or women but preferable not :D )

Reet then. The connectors and contacts on the connector block mounted on the wiper motor are prone to corrosion so I'd whip the motor off and have a look at them. Two of the contacts form a switch which tells the motor to stop turning it's operated by a plastic noggin that runs on a cam in the wiper motor body, this could be worn. The actual switch on the steering could be all crudded up as well so may need looking at.

Now then, when you say down is intermittent. Do you mean the lever returns and the wipers only wipe when the lever is in the down position. Or do the wipers actually wipe intermittently i.e. with a delay between wipes until the lever is returned?

I had a similar saga with my wipers on me 93 200TDi. Tried new switch, relay, motor - still the same.
Turned out to be a dodgy connection in the wiring - on the back of the fuse board.
I've got a spare relay and column switch if you need either of them, but, as Grunt says, check the parking switch on the back of the connector block on the motor first, then check the wiring through.

when lever is down, it shud be imtermittent wipers, ie, wipe, park, delay, wipe, park, delay etc. they dont do that. they wipe, down, wipe, down, etc. no delay. and wipers dont return to down postion (park) on any of the speeds, i have to knock switch off just at the right time.
thought i wasnt going to be simple and wud be somehting silly.
thanks guys

Yeah well mines like that but it's s'posed to be, press the lever down to wipe and the lever springs back up again automatically.

yer thats what mine does... wish i had intermit wipers...

if you need a new motor, i have one and will be in Swansea this fri and over the weekend. sounds like a connection problem over a mech problem, esp if this has only just happened.

I was wondering if there was a model that did have intermittent ones then its just a matter of getting the switch and relay gubbins off it.

isnt like that.
wipers have 3 postions.
down 1, up 1 and up 2.
didnt have time this weekend to do it. got a boat load of presentaions and design work to do.

Hey,
Mine has intermittent on my 92tdi i think you'll find it'll be a dodgy wire or bad earth.

Grunts advice about the parking cam is the one, I had it with a TR6 that did exactly the same, and as that nicked its Wiper mechanism from a Landy/Mini I would imagine its the same issue, on that one the cam was spinning on the motor shaft and a new cam was needed.

My '91 has ONE speed, wherever the lever is! I also have to manually 'park' them, ie try and judge when they are at the bottom!
It doesnt bother me TBH, theres worse things that could be wrong with it!

Hi
I have exactly the same problem on my TD5, happened on way home tonite in thr rain!!!

I guess I need to check wiring but what I need to know as have not had Landy long I don't know how to get to and how to find the relay and wiring etc etc ... any one help??

Same thing happening here, but wierder!

Got a '89 Landy 90 with four positions and it's:

Two up (Should be on fast) - Wipers stay off
One up (Should be on norm) - Wipers stay off
Parked (Should be off) - Windscreen washer starts up (?!)
Down (Intermittent) - Wipers on norm.

Bought new switch but it only had 3 positions (PRC 3900) so tried to splice it back to the original wiring from the "broken" switch (made sense last night after a few beers) and now it doesn't work at all. Had made executive descision to Not Drive It In The Rain :D
