I’ve been replacing the wiper boxes on my 1992 Defender. Both new and old wheel boxes have a circular shaft, but the hole in the bulkhead is flat top & bottom (see photo), which stops the shaft going through. The shaft on the later td5 boxes is flat top & bottom. Since the bulkhead was replaced before I bought it, could it be a later bulkhead? And if it is, should I file out the hole or just get the right wheelboxes? Would I have to change anything else?
Before you ask no, I don’t know how they managed to get them to work before!
 
Ahh ok how did you get them out?...
They looked normal when I took them out, just undid the nut and pulled the cable out. They were quite tight and difficult to get out but I didn’t take much notice as I had no reason to think they might be the wrong ones. Not sure how far through the hole they were or how the guy who rebuilt it got them to go through.
 
Yes, I bought the old type some time ago, the motor's been off the road for a while and I've been working on it on and off.

If theyre the same they must fit like the old ones...fustrating I know spent weeks on the brakes on my 101...got mechanic mate down for bbq to change plugs cause I couldnt get them out easy he said 10mins later
something not right here...standard plug socket didnt fit all of them he went off got his snapon american thinwall socket and it fitted left it with me to change them had bbq..next day removed plugs only to find long instead of short fitted yep last one rhs side rear snapped off thread locked against head worst to deal with so head off take to specialist 20€ to remove plug and check head...90€ for snapon socket for toolbox though...and wev'e now got a garage together him guru me bought equipment...
 
To clarifiy...he had around 80 grands worth of diagnostic and snapon tools...I helped out with work vehicle,jacks ,cranes and axle stands plus other support..
 
@jamesmartin if I can pick your brain... do you see any problem with drilling the bulkhead to fit the older wheelboxes? I’ve done an older one before but can’t remember, do they just have round holes in the bulkhead?

later ones have different motors and racks, i guess the outer hole is ok but inner isnt

The motor etc worked with this setup before, as far as I can tell the whole system is the old type, they’ve just not put the shafts through properly before. I’d have thought drilling the existing holes round would allow me to fit them better. Can you see any problems with that?

the spindles are stepped isnt it only the inner hole youd need to make round,theres no issue as long as spindles are held reasonably snug,your bulkhead must be 2002 on in that case i just looked at a galv chassis change im doing its got a fresh bulkhead to fit as wel its the same old is round hole the replacement flat top bottom

I tried refitting the new ones again. Seems the previous owner had them fitted so the wider inner end of the spindle just butted up to the inside hole. It looks like it’s far enough through, I’ll take photos later, I’m working I’m the caravan just now.
