Drivers window has given up the ghost.

Going to order one of the repair kits off ebay. Which are the preferred ones to buy, and how easy are they to fix?

thanks

I have just ordered one!! There are a few threads on the subject (search using "Window" in title, but nothing really definitive, Time will tell!!!

i have just fitted one !!!!!!! real easy job ..about 45 mins old one out and new one in ....dont know what all the fuss is about with changing them ....i

I used the OSCO Ebay £9.99 kit (EBAY User osco_Ltd), ordered 4pm delivered next day!!

The kit comes with ready made cable & Guides , new cable Drum , and cable to window fixing plate.

Fitting is straight forward (well nearly), approx 1 hour

Tools needed:
10mm Socket + small extention
30tx Torx
Trim removing tool (optional)
A 2nd pair of hands (to tension cable)

Remove door trim (1 x screw on Door plate, 2 x screws on arm rest)
Disconnect window switch lead
power lead to window motor
I also removed speaker (rear RH door) to give more access.

Lower window, remove 3 x 10mm bolts holding mech to door, and one 10mm bolt holding cable plate to window (need window at lowest setting to access) and short ext on socket to reach.

Remove the mech from door.

remove motor 3 x 30tx torx

remove sorry mess of old cables, cable drum and the 90 degree plastic guides on the end of the mech guide.

fit new cable with 90 deg cable guides into mech guide, ensure long and short cables right way round (long top, short motor end)

locate cable (mid point ferrule) into cable plate ( i actually reused the OEM, as this was a more robust metal/plastic item rather than the new all plastic one with the kit) click plate into guide and make sure moves up and down track freely, (a bit of lube helps)

Locate cable end into cable drum, make sure drum right way round to engage with motor splines. Make sure cable plate is at lower window setting (motor end), take up cable slack winding up cable on cable drum, it will go only one way (its obvious), but make sure its matching the the top/botton orientation of the cable entry guides. Essentially as the cable drum rotates, the cable is pulled onto the cable drum and unwound at the other end.

Next, get a helper, have the helper hold in the both in/out cable guides to compress the springs and to give you the max amount of cable, locate the cable end into the other end of the cable drum and take up slack winding onto the cable drum, its fiddly but can be done.

make sure cable drum is located on pivot point, and get helper to release pressure on the springs. Take care not to knock cable drum off pivot point, as until motor is refitted it is not fully secure. Make sure cable not binding or overlapping on drum, should be in grooves.

You should now have, fully tensioned cable.

Refit motor.

I then tested, connected up power lead and switch, just to make sure all operating smoothly.

Refit (reverse of above)

Test,

Go get beer and congratulate yourself

Oops corrected EBAY name to osco_ltd

Brilliant, maybe this should be a sticky thread. Otherwise, a sticky thread of common faults with links to excellent and useful articles like this.

Most common fault according to the in-house poll!

There are many threads using various means of fixing the regulator/cable, a merger would be good, just another 2 of many ;)

I do say remove bolt holding mech to window before removing moter mech from door, no need to remove the glass, that will slide up and down in the door in its runners

i bought one in the previous replies but made the error of winding it on wrong and the first go it unwound wrong and bent the cable so now it doesnt wind on the spool :-( looks like ill have to buy another and try again.

Any pics on the way the spool part is fitted etc would help :)
