Hiya all, which winch oil or grease do people use and recommend?

Warn recommend an aerospace grease that's made of unobtanium and I've had conflicting answers from a couple of places, so I'll not say what I think ... but I need to clean the gearbox out and replace the grease/oil, so what do you use?

I know I'll also get differing answers here, but that's as usual, I'll work on a consensus ...

Cheers .. ;)

Cheers Rick.

Was told either ep90 or ATF or CV joint grease! Wasn't sure, but I have loads of ep so no worries .. :)

See you in Wales .. ;)

Cod liver??? :D

Its good for keeping things supple apparently. :D

Hello @Paul D

Bit of a thread revival. Hoping you can give me a pointer, which grease did you use on the clutch / gearbox ? I have opened mine to check it and it appears to be using a white thick grease.

Cheers

When I first asked the question I used Ep. Not good, it just left the winch ... Moved on to a grey coloured CV grease, but now use a red Lithium waterproof grease! You need, in my opinion, a fairly thin grease that's sticky but up to the pressures of gearing running at medium speeds.

I'll check in the shed tomorrow and let you know exactly.

The Warn originally came to me, second hand, with very thick grease, no idea what type or anything about it, but it was almost impossible to freespool. Changing the grease to EP 90 improved that tremendously. The changes since that just kept improving it.

Cheers @Paul D and @johnlad,

This is what I have ordered to try.

You don't want to use KY in your winch. It's water based and washed away quickly.

ps I only know this as I use tubs of the stuff to get my rubber suit, for scuba diving, on. You need a latex safe lubricant for the seals :)
