from a 1981 SIII 109 LWB fit on a 1974 SII SWB
I've been offered for free a SII with no front axle or engine
I have a spare 2.25 engine and a 109 axle. If the axle fits I will be
able to convince She who must be obeyed that I can turn it round in to a runner, If not then I'll have to pass.

1974 would be a sIII?

The front axles are the same on LWB/SWB but the LWB rears have the springs set further apart than the SWB.

As a complete axle it should fit, parts may not be interchangeable though (10 spline vs 24 etc), and your track rod ends may also need to be changed but it'll fit :)

I'm sure the later models have a rationalised axle which I believe has a different hub seal and wheel bearing arrangement as well IIRC

a front axle from a 109 will fit an 88" and vice versa, as long as it's from a Series 2a or S3 without any troubles

there's no point in confusing the issue with minor details of "rationalised" bearings etc' as it's the axle case that bolts to the springs

....until you need to buy seals, bearings etc at a later date! If you ever sell the vehicle on PLEASE tell the new owner about this.
