Curious to know what the apparent failure was and the bio quality-my sunroof leaks sometimes,Land Rover would blame that on bio use.

Facts rather than heresay would be good.

My oil comes free, otherwise I would not bother.
Current fuel savings since May at 100 lts month, assuming dino diesel is £1.40 lt(don't buy it so not sure on price) =£1125 .
Reckon to save about £3k a year between my mondeo tdci and td5 combined.I accept the risks, but so far so good.
If I get 2 yrs from my td5 it has paid for itself
:)

What's the situation with regards getting stopped by the police etc and having your tank dipped? Is it legal to use your own bio fuel? It would be worthshile me doing this as my parents run a busy restaurant and with mates in the game too i'd have a very good supply of used veg oil. Also at a risk of offending the repeat post police, do you have a recipe you use that you would consider sharing? My fuel bills are crippling me and living out in the sticks make it all the worse as I have to drive a fair way just to pick up a pint of milk if I run out. TIA.

Everyone in the UK has a personal biofuel use allowance before they fall for tax.The allowance is 2500 lts in any 12 month period, exceed the allowance and duty is payable on the lot.Records should be kept of biofuel put into your vehicle(amount and date)to be available for HM customs inspection.A non commercial driver will struggle to use 200 lts of fuel a month under normal driving conditions, just running from A to B.
I cannot remember any year where I have exceeded 2000 lts(let alone 2500 lts) as I can only drive one vehicle at a time and the Mondeo does best part of 50 mpg

Here is a good place to start to see if making bio is for you:
Vegetable Oil Diesel Forum

Join the forum, say hello and there may be someone local who will show you their process-they are a good helpful bunch of peeps.

It must be stated though making bio can be dangerous, you are using toxic aggresive chemicals and takes time to perfect.
Finding a source of oil is normally the hardest part.
Miles per smile driving past gas stations though puts a big smile on your face

Dont belive everything you read.

Thats exactly why I run my TD5 on biobiesel :)

They dont have a delivery fleet

Down here in sussex the artics that deliver to McD's have McD's logo all over them and yup their exhaust smells same as mine so deffo bio in them in some proportion

mcd's put out a big advert on how they are using there own waste oil to power there delivery wagons a few years back.

md must be getting bio from mcd's because there adverts said they where using there waste oil in ther adverts but there burgers look the same in the adverts as you get served

Alright let us try this another way McDonalds food is delivered by trucks running on biodiesel, made from their own used oil.It is damn good oil(mainly rape seed and little used) but you cannot get your hands on it-god I have tried.
.
Have good w'end

their "oil" is called shortening and used to be solid at room temp, they then changed it but it looked like and had the consitancy of pva glue at room temp!

I thought all McD's oil was now rape seed, but they wont let me have it anyway.
The oil you are talking about is Palm oil and hydrogenated palm oil-this oil is frowned on now due to de-forestation abroad in order to grow Palm-It is the common oil in chip shops delivered in a "block" and because of its higher melting point gives the chips better crunch, apparently
It makes fine biodiesel for summer use.The bio from it waxes around 11 or 12c ,you can get it down to about 8c with 5% petrol or misfuel. But it is risky for winter use.It has one of the highest energy values of all biodiesels' as well as high cetane number. My td5 was on it exclusively until October last year and will be going back on Palm bio around April (subject to temps-a frost night ####s you). All biodisel waxes slightly lower than the parent oil in terms of melting point temp. And of course is far far thinner than the parent oil.
Biodiesel can be made from any Veg oil or animal oil-had a mate run a vw tdi on bio made from Lamb fat for about 9 months-where he got so much Lamb fat is another matter.
You can even make good bio from the stinking fat **** they get out of the sewers.
To locate a source of oil is tough as you compete with the commercial collectors,it astounds me that some peeps still pour it down the drain.Such a waste
Incidentally the guy I posted about 2 yrs on bio use in his TD5 ,has now moved on to 3 yrs use and 24000 miles covered, and still only replaced the in tank pump as the only failure, but of course these are not bomb proof on dino diesel ,so hard to say if it was bio related. But the fuel cost savings are huge if you do the math at 15p per litre
