It is a 98 My 4 v8 Auto went ok and overnight will not start again just nothingWhat I have checked
1 disconnected all leads from starter motor connected 12v bat to the bat terminal and then connected a 12 v to switched terminal an the solenoid engaged connected 12 v to starter and same it worked.
2 Recharged batt and checked 14 v
3 checked all fueses
4 noticed a burning smell from fuse box but looked ok
What I next
It feels like when you leave it in drive to start not park
Any sujestions

Should not start in Drive unless you have a faulty inhibit switch or XYZ Switch...

Sounds like a loss of BeCM to ECU sync...

Can this just happen or are there any signs of loss of sync. Also how can I check the gear box sensor that it is in park have moved the selector from dive to park and dash says it is in park

When you turn ignition on, do you get the check engine light? If not you've lost sync (and yes I think it can just happen unfortunately :( )

Not necessarily so....not sure which way round it is but I am not sure that is a reliable way of checking on all models...

Ah, didn't know that, I shall re-word!
If the car suddenly won't start AND suddenly there's no check engine light it's probs a reasonable assumption there's a loss of sync :p

I think that is so for pre 99 Diesels...

Again not sure which way round it is, but on the Diesel... if the CEL isn't on at ignition and the engine turns or the CEL is on but the engine doesn't turn...one is pre 99 one is post 99, just don't know which way round...

On the Petrol models...GEMS will turn but not fire...and THOR will not turn...or is it the other way round???

Not sure, but reliance on the CEL isn't 100% on all models and years.

Did you means its like when you leave it in drive to start ie nothing ?
Have you lights in the instrument pannel in position one ?
Check your relays for a known good working then try the others in the working one for starters if one is shorting or playing up you will notice this on the pins of the relay .

Petrols one only saint mil lights does not get extinguished
Diesels have no indication to loss of sync

Can I short ou the starter relay or starter to start just to get a bit further without changing parts or is it just change and see

Iif its not turning over then yes you can try loss if sync will prevent it from starting not turning over once again do you have instrument lights?

Depending on whether it's GEMS or THOR, some crank but don't start, some don't crank as Saint said earlier.
Pull the ignition relay and the starter relay and examine the connector blades for discolouration, blueing or burn marks. Swap the relays for ones of the same colour from another place in the fuse box.

Thanks for reminding me its a v8 yes op check relay it does sound like your fuse box from the burning smell as to your question on jumping the starter you can as long as you have power to the starter from the feed wire if no feed its either relay fues box or maybe out of sync but you bred to help every one by going into more detail as to your symptoms and what you have tried it could be as simple as gearbox switch out if line via the cable but if your dash say n r d 123 ect then unlikely .

Got her started just put the ignition on and put 12v on the Solinoid switch terminal going to see if a resink will work
