The landys i have been looking at in my price range for a project and a fishing/general abuse. They are all around 130,000 miles and B/C registration so thats "85" i want a 90 and to be honest think i will buy the one i have looked at last weekend it is a diesel the original engine it runs well drives well is pretty clean and no more gutless than the other 2.5 n/a but i was contemplating fitting or getting fitted a newer engine the 200/300 and i guess i would need the gearing too. Question is even though the engine runs and sounds fine how many more miles would it do before i need a rebuild or another engine.Probably a hard question to answer but is there a ball park figure of 140,000 or less/more. also where would you recommend i get another engine /box from?

i bought mine with 140k on it , they'll go on forever as long as you service 'em bout every 6k , how much you got to spend ?

i wouldnt go down the "buy a 2.5 and upgrade straight away" route. you would be better off looking for an early 200tdi. my mate picked up a 110 station wagon f plate i think for £2700. you should be able to find a 90 van for your budget.

gearbox will be the same, its a simple take out, drop in job. defender engines go for a premium though. 200tdi will set you back nearly 1k. you could buy a disco engine and get conversion mounts and such. this works out a little cheaper. i know stig is selling yella's old 200 out of the disco for 275 i think? i dunno. but that would deff. be worth a look.

like i said, save the ball ache and buy an early 200tdi.

when i was lookin' for one that was roughly wot i had , i looked at loads over a year and a half , i nearly bought a t***k cab for that ,200 tdi anawl , but in the end i bunged up the mortgage and said fek it , and paid 4300 for a 93 csw , parts are sooooo cheap as well

for 2750 I have just bought a 90 with a 2.5 N/A engine, and the specialist has done everything on it that it needs. It's had engine parts changed, and a good service. See what you can get, the N/A isn't that bad an engine - it's rock solid

I bought a 110 truck cab with a 2.5 n/a diesel last week, goes well and needs nothing doing other than cosmetic tidying, even got 6months tax, 900quid:D

Private sale you will get a cosmetially tatty, early 200tdi, van or truck cab for £2500 if you don't mind waiting for it.

Depends on how big a project yer after really? You can get a trashed Tdi for a grand - but you'll most likely need to rebuild it and that'll cost you the difference between the grand you spend and what a reasonable one would cost you from a dealer.

If it were me, and it was last November, I'd be on the look out for an early (1990 H plate to 1991 J plate) Tdi of any description, with a sound chassis and bulkhead and no nasty noises from the engine/transmission but with enough else wrong with it to take best part of a grand off the asking price.

There's plenty of threads on here about buying used '90s - well worth a read - search facility is oop thar ^

'ere ya go:

Auto Trader UK

That should list 2 cars - 2nd one is a red van on an H plate - £2595, should be worth a look - long way from you though ;)

Cheers,

I bought a 90 TD on an F-plate (Edith) for £800.

ok after a year and half of trouble free motoring she's on SORN getting rebuilt (chassis and bulkhead), but I'm keeping the engine and box - they're solid. Regular servicing and don't thrash it and it'll get you to uranus.

I saw a 90 locally recently for £500, a 110 TD good nick, just needed a rear crossmember and some patches.

I got a 93 plate 3 door disco £800. 12 mths MOT. but it had to be a bent one. cause it needs loads of welding the PAS box is ****ing steering fluid and I think I may need to replace the gearbox. but the engine is sweet as a nut So even if I have to spend £500/£600 0n it I'll still have done alright with it.

There's a 90 HT in a car sales place near me in Leeds £1890. only seen it as I drive past but it looks very clean and tidy.

I just sold a 84 110 2.5 n/a for £350 needed a bit of tlc 2 front outriggers and had a bit of crankcase pressurisation. But the guy who bought it seemed happy enough.

To be honest and for no particular explainable reason it is quite important for me to buy a landy that will need another engine, or at least that will benefit from a newer engine, after all it is a project i want and i am expecting to spend a fair bit, over time that is. I would start with the bodywork/inside then worry about the engine at a later date.Although a priority is to give her a good service including a few gaskets and seals, that should help to get my head back into mechanice as ive done none for 5 years (im now a lowley office worker). I have looked at one that is a b reg 127,000 miles and it is really clean all round except for a need for new prop shaft,
It also has 1year m.o.t, steering gaurd, snorkal, front spots .rear work lamp, dog gaurd, 2 inch suspension lift,cb radio, diskbrakes all round,5 anaconda mudterrains including 1 new.Rebel 4x4 side steps and rear step, mounty 14 inch steering wheel, cd player, roof rack.stainless steel front grill, loads of history, body is typical for its age and needs slight attention to a few other minor bits like the window doesn't go up and down unless you help it by holding the glass and the speedo cable needs replacing, From a quick inspection with a hammer and screwdriver the underneath is looking and sounding pretty good rings when struck.also its black so rustproofing used..(no thud). It has got range rover rear axle and i dont know what the benefit of this is? if any.

Rangie rear axle is for discs on the back - B plate 90's and 110's all had drums - other than that it's identical to a standard one.

Despite all the toys, which might be fun to have but are a long way from essential, only buy it if you're sure the chassis and bulkhead are in really good order. To fit all the toys you describe should cost in the hundreds, to replace a chassis and bulkhead will cost in the thousands.

The gearbox and transfer box from a 1985 90 are pretty much identical to a 200tdi, you can save yourself time and munny in the future by making sure they're good now. Then all you'd need would be the Tdi engine an exhaust downpipe if it's a discovery one and a few bits of wiring for the different glow plugs (err... I think!)

Cheers,

yes for genuine LR parts Maybe. you can pick up a good 2nd hand chassis for less than £400/ and a bulkhead for £100. a brand new 90 chassis is only £650 +vat

Ok - you can do yours on a budget if yer likes redhand - I'd do mine propply ;)

Richards Chassis Land Rover chassis manufacturer, LandRover A bag + VAT for a galv chassis

Hey hey - what dooyer know - we're into the thousands already!

If you want to waste your hard earned paying way over the odds be my guest but it's more a case of can cost thousands not will. as long as you waxoyle the chassis from new and slap plenty of good paint and underseal on the paddocks chassis it'll last as long as an original chassis.

Yeah right - makes you wonder how Richards stay in business dunt it

I figure it works like this:

Pay a few hundred extra now and never have to touch it again and all the components and panels fit first time, more or less - bonus!

or

Save a few hundred now and have to rebuild it again in 10 to 15 years at the same cost as last time + inflation and have to practically hand fabricate everything as nothing lines up - not such a good looking saving any more is it?

But hey - everyone is different I suppose.
