I remember in "the good old days" we discovered that 12" wheels from a Hillman Imp would fit our Mini based autocross car. The only snag was that the stud-holes in the Imp wheels were bigger than the stud-holes in Mini wheels, so we used Mini wheelnuts with washers under them. Once they were tightened up the washers took on a taper, and we never had a wheel come off. I suspect that was because we were lucky.

When both front wheels fell off simultaneously at 60 mph (nuts pulled through the wheel holes) the front end dug in and it rolled end over end 4 times.
That was the end of that mini, and of my racing career.

No wheels fell off!

Our engine was a Austin 1100 with a Cooper S head (good trick), a AEG 649 cam, and a Shorrock supercharger fed by a 2" SU. The diff was welded solid. It was AMAZING on grass, and extremely dodgy on tarmac.

I was just the driver - my mate and his dad were the builders / mechanics.
They had a precision engineering business and were bloody geniuses at building quick motors.
I know it was a 1340cc Cooper S lump with twin webbers and it went like stink!

Incidentally, my mates dad had a mini with a Lotus Cortina engine!
 
Back in my days in the autograss world i had a mid engined V8 anglia on a upside down vw box and rear axle alright going down the straights but a bugger getting the front to grip to turn ended up with old engine back in the front with a slab tied on top won a few race like that and my mate had a 1750 engine race tuned head and balanced crank in a mini he won the championship a few times
 
also disco 2, disco 3 range rover have the same pcd of 5 x 120. disco 1, rrc, fender have pcd 5 x 165. but hey we know nothing!
 
im sure d2's & d3's are m14 x 1.5. d1, rrc, fenders are m16 x 1.5mm


Cripes ... if they are both 1.5mm pitch, do the M16 nuts take a grip on the M14 studs?

Sounds like a recipe for WHEELS OFF if there was a wheel-nuts mix-up.

But Hey! I forgot - all Landy wheels fit all Landies. Silly me . . .

May I ask what you do for a living CharlesY and Wiltshire landyman? If my wanting to clarify terminology for the purpose of accuracy offends you then I apologise.

You are rather emphasising my point for me, ie that it is important to use correct terminology to avoid misunderstandings, clearly misunderstanding my ( assumption ) that "all Landrovers use a 5 bolt stud pattern" as "all Landy wheels fit all landies" which is emphatically not what I said. Clearly an m16xnn nut will not fit an m14xnn stud. If you want to know specifics about what from model x will fit model y, I'm not your man as I'm not a Landrover specialist. However if you wish to know about procedure, working methods, diagnosis loops or terminology then I'm happy to help

Oh yes, probably it will.

I think it will 'fit', as in offer up a M16x1.5 NUT to a M14x1.5 stud, and screw it on;
the threads might even engage cleanly as the pitch of both is the same 1.5mm.

I haven't time to try this today.

After the wheels come loose or fall off. then we can discuss the matter in more detail.

I don't see why you're so aggitated, all I was trying to do was help clarify some things to help answer the original question. You seem to know your stuff so you more than most should know what I meant yet you persist in being obtuse! I corrected you on PCD, we live we learn. You've learned something new.I was informed that some landrovers have different stud diameters yet use the same pitch. I live, I learn. Why insist on picking up on something I said in an attempt to pick holes in it when you're clearly knowledgeable enough to know about thread dimensions?
If you can get an M16 nut to engage on an m14 stud then I'd suggest the threads are rather unevenly cut. we both know that an attempt to torque them up would cause threads to be stripped due to the 1mm engagement gap.
I'm not going into detail in an attempt to patronise you, but to make sure a casual reader who may or may not be a member has useful accurate information, that's all. I'm not trying to belittle, antagonise or annoy anyone so why are you? chill out, have a beer, have two.
 
All I can say is, without these little mini-soap operas, the forum would be a very boring place.............so keep up the bull**** guys.......its quite entertaining, no matter who is right or wrong.
