Hi

We're working our way through the chassis and have reached the back. It looks like a quarter chassis will do the job. Everything else seems okay when I hit it with a hammer; hence the rust and muck on the floor.

There are some brilliant posts showing how to do a quarter chassis, thanks for that chaps!

My questions are:
1. do you think putting on a quarter chassis is the right thing to do?
2. if yes, then we will have new dumb irons at the front and new quarter chassis at the back. Is it worth spending £200 or so getting it galvanized?
(I'll do some searching before I ask for the pitfalls of hot dip galvanizing a chassis:scratching_chin

My gut feel is yes to both but never having done anything like this before I thought I'd ask the experts.

a 1/4 chassis will reach the cross member behind gearbox, so if its fine from there forwards

It seems fine from just forward of the rear-most hangers. Roughly where the exhaust crosses the chassis at 90 degrees. the holes in the upper section show roughly the end of the rot. It appears a bit was welded on and it's really rusted compared to the original chassis.

Just found an interesting thread on Galvanizing an old chassis. The essence of it, is don't do it.

My answer is now yes, and no to Galv. Thanks again chaps.

Hi Grant,

The 1/4 chassis will replace the section up the area with the big holes in the top of the old chassis. You might be unlucky and end up with having to try to weld in that section. I recently replaced the rear 1/4 chassis on my series 3 so can measure it for you when I get home so can can see exactly how long it is, if thats any help?

Phil,
Just phoned famous four and they said from the tech drawings it was 600mm.
Paddocks said 157mm.
I'd appreciate your dimension if it's easy for you.

Hi Grant.

Just measured the rear 1/4 chassis I fitted and it looks exactly likethe photo of the one you put up. Mine measured about 530mm. It meant that the new chassis starts about 230mm from the bolt hole of the bump stop. It should easily get rid of the scabby bit of the chassis at the back. Hope that helps. Phil.

no thats not a 1/4 chassis thats a rear cross member with extensions 1/4 chassis butts up to next cross member

The quarter chassis was the right size for what we needed.
In the process, I've managed to paint most of the chassis with red oxide and I'm planning on using linseed oil for inside the chassis.

Nice work
Worth buying an autodarkening weld mask , solar powered ones are as cheap as £20 boon on these tasks.
