I'm about tp replace the springs on my 109. As it's never heavily loaded I wonder if SWB springs on the rear will give a better ride, but not sure if they are the same length as the 109 spring?

in short, no they are different lengths. Fit parabolics if you want a better ride

I've done the reverse - put springs off a LWB onto a SWB, so I can't see why it could not be done. I don't think it's a good idea though as the ride height will be lowered due to the extra weight.

Isn't the only difference that the 109 springs have more leaves?

I agree with Fenby, they are the same size and will fit. Whether it is a good idea is a different matter. If your springs are old, the correct new springs will probably give a better ride.

Strangely it's the other way around. Standard 88" rear springs have 11 leaves. Standard 109" commercial rears have 8 leaves which are thicker than the SWB leaves, but station wagons have 8 normal leaves and 2 helpers (the helpers are very chunky). 109" 8+2 springs work nicely on my 88" IIA and I'd guess they would work well on lightly loaded 109" commercials too. I'm not 100% sure that the 109" commercials are 8 leaf, I'm just assuming that because it's what I've got on my 109", but I suppose I could have the heavy duty type fitted to 1 ton 109s.

Very informative fenby. I've just bought a 109 so I'll have a look what's on it later.

very interesting indeed ...

i would like to get parabolic springs from paddocks for my '75 109 softtop.
asked the folks there if i may fit the 3-leaf ones (Part No. PARA02) - answer was:

We don;t feel that we can help you. We wouldn't advise that you put SWB parabolics on a LWB. We have sold only a couple of pairs of parabolics to customers with a soft top, and they have been unhappy as the vehicle becomes too high.
You are best contacting any local or national Series Clubs in Germany, or posting the question on an online forum.

Its one a piece on the shocks - you might think thats odd, but, when one of your brand new shocks comes detached from the chassis and drags along the road sending sparks flying at the cars behind you, it is useful that you can just buy one to repalce it and not have to get a set
