Hi folks, this is my first post on here and alas it's with a problem. Hope you can help.
I have a 53 reg Td5 GS Disco with an auto box. It lives on the drive when not in use so i wondered if the rain/damp may have affected it.
I walked past the vehicle this evening (it's been there all day) and noticed the dash lights were on. Went to get the key and tried unlocking/locking, put key in ignition and started the engine, gearbox was in limp home mode.
Drove car up and down the drive (no difference) then switched off at key. Engine kept running. Took key out ,engine still running.Messed about for quite a while with key and engine finally switched off. Took key out, got out and tried to lock car.Locks would not operate .Then the dash lights all came on again. Indicators won't work either.Windows are a bit iffy. Ended up disconnecting the battery for the night.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on please ? cheers 4wd.

Ignore Yella, someone will be along soon with a proper answer!

(fully expect YD to come back with something like "ignore Yella at your Peril", or some such wag).

I have a 300tdi so can't help. Have you tried a search on this forum? You may be surprised by what you find, as I dimly recall seeing some similar issues before.

thanks for the re assurance tonyw ,i have searched but not yet found anything. I'll wait in hope , cheers ,4wd.

awww come on tony, i aint that bad,i see yer upped yer tyres to 38(only 2 away from the magical40) i do help people sometimes ;), seriously, i dunt know anything about td5's they are a bag of electronics and thats that, what i would advise is that if you are a member of theaa etc call em out, they have laptops they can plug in and diagnose faults ;)

I hate to admit that yella disco may be right, (Sarcastic **** that he is)but the AA do have laptops and they have all the required diognistic software to be able to pinpoint the problem there and then...They,ll probably charge you to reset the system but hey ho...Least you,ll know then... A friend of mine had exactly(almost identical) the same problem with, strangly enough, exactly the same model.,make, year as yours.. His was reset and the AA put it down to a flat battery the day before and my mate jump starting it and a spark/charge/surge upsetting the ECU...You never know eh? Worth a try i suppose...

Update. Thanks for all the advice . Reconnected the battery this morning and everthing works perfectly. Hopefully that's an end to it and i can only suppose that damp had upset the electrics. Did notice the fuse box under the steering wheel had a very small amount of damp in it. Could this be from a leaking windscreen or any other weak spot you know of ? I'd like to cure it in case it is the cause of the problem, thanks so far ,4wd.

Could be, if you have a sunroof, that the sunroof drain pipes are blocked...These can cause wet patches in the floor area and down behind the dash...Just a thought coz i had the same probs with a 200tdi that kept developing electric problems...Never new the sunroof had drain pipes but there you go...And it was the only Disco i,ve ever had that had ANY electrical probs..And i,ve had 3...On the third one now...Learn something new everyday eh?

You could be right,I'll blow 'em out with the compressor. I've had sunroof drain prob's on a previous 300tdi but that time it just caused a damp roof lining.Anyway, i'll give it a go.Cheers.

I've seen this problem before, its a water leak from the windscreen and/or sunroof, it's leaking water into the fusebox and shorting it out.

I,m not sure but i think the drain pipes for the sunroof come out somewhere at the bottom of the windscreen pillars and inside the front wings...Could be that there blocked and chucking the water into the dash?? Just a thought..
