Hi Guys

As some of you know, i dont mind buying the odd motor that needs some work.

Bought a P38 of tex as he didn't want to do the repair

Had it on the ramp today
Can confitrm that yes you can remove the sump with the engine in the motor. It is a bit fiddly and there are some bolts tucked away in odd places holding the sump on

Would probably be doable on the floor, but it would be emotional

When i got the sump off it ws full of oil sludge so thick i could pick it up with my fingers
the oil pickup had white metal in it so it did not look good

when i got the plate off in the sump, i could move one end cap with my fingers

Think it is going to be engine out and replacement one in.
May rebuild this one for the project motor undecided yet as have only cracked two end caps off opn the big ends.

No 5 which was where i had guessed had all but destroyed the shell

So top tip guys change your oil regulalrly and maybe worth an engine flush if the car is of unknown origin

That's the sort of challenge I like,wish I was over there getting down & dirty with you !!
Looking at the ****e thats there so far, I would pull the lump out and strip the lot down. What does the crank journal look like where you have removed the cap ? Judging by the state of the oil and the metal particles, it's a fair bet that other parts are shot or on the way out..piston rings, camshaft & tappets, rocker shafts & rockers etc. Hopefully, the crank is ok, just look for clean journals, check them with a 1-2" micrometer, not a vernier and they should be round to within .001" (.025mm in new money). If the liners look ok and there are no signs of water mixed in with the oil or white creamy sludge then it could be well worth a rebuild. Engine parts are relatively cheap and easy to get.
Largest expense will be gallons of White Spirit for the cleaning !!!

I haven't seen a true jelly mould sump since the days of the Perkins 4.99 and 4.108 engines. have fun Cavey.
 
i had my oil done by the main stealer 5k miles ago. now i think i might do it again this week, i have a p38 DSE. after emptying the oil what do you reckon to do? flush the engine? and with what? diesel? white spirits?

Use flushing oil, it is available. Long, long ago we used 50% oil 50% paraffin, let engine tick over for ten mins or so then drain and refill with new oil. DO NOT rev engine whilst flushing, put a new filter in whilst flushing then replace it with another new one when new oil is used. If you have a badly sludged engine you will never remove the crap from the bottom of the sump unless you remove the sump and clean it. Think the reference to white spirit was for cleaning off stripped parts. Dont stick that in your sump and run engine or you will definatly have a rebuild on your hands.

Yeah..just to confirm I meant White Spirit for cleaning only......unless you want to use the dishwasher !!!!
 
Buy diesel engine oil (Comma) in 25 ltr drums from your local motor factor (not your local car shop), buy filters in bulk from Island 4x4. Then change the oil every 3000/4000mls after a good run when hot, thats about all you need to do.

Jouurnals dont look too bad, will have to micrometer them up when i am home on fri

No 2 has also worn all the white metal away on the shell, but it is in a lot better nick than no 5

Didn't get the lump out today, was offered a roast dinner at 1pm so that shortened my morning, then the girlfriend arrived with a problem on the Roadworthy P38

so that also distracted my time and her brothers as he was about to strip his disco in the workshop as he had a wet drivers footwell>>>!!

At the moment the engine is being a pain to remove but totally agree with you irish the lump has got to be damaged further up and i reckon the turbo is shot as well as the intercooler had oil in the pipe to the turbo and on the inlet side as well

Reckon i might change the engine for a second hand one then look to rebuild this one

what a waste of a good engine by the bloke before tex who has either not serviced it or put some right thick oil in it to quieten the knock and then sell it

still give me something to the think about whilst i am working away in my B & B all week

Why not just strip & examine it with a view to a rebuild first. That way, if it's worth doing, you are saving money on buying a second hand lump that you know nothing about...history wise.... plus if a rebuild is feasible, you know what has gone into it.
 
Take your point, will pop it apart and have a look

but may rebuild this engine for my green project motor, ( the nicest one)

and use the scrap yard one for this motor to get it on the road

Scrap yard is a mate of the father in law so hopefully will get an honest answer re the engine status etc.

soooooo glad i didnt atemted it on my drive now with snow aswell

at least i knew what i was getting in it.

feel more for you mate, only bad news is i reckon turbo is probably shot as well, oil in the inlet manifold and intercooler

Just to update you on one of the projects

engine has been out for a while now and am busy swapping bits on to the donor engine

Took the turbo apart today

definate the guts of it are shot

also cleaned the sump and baffle with a steam cleaner which was fairly messy affair

just waiting on gaskets before the sump swap and inlet manifold and rocker cover

then hopefully reassemble turbo and put that on then stick in in the motor>>

Oh yeah and all that wiring up to do on the engine with sensors and stuff

oh goodie
