I've noticed that most Disco owners on here have a Disco 1. Is there any particular reason for this? I was under the impression that the Disco 2 is a huge advancement. It's not like they're expensive either, as you can get them for as little as £4000.

Thats ok then i'll have 2 please

IMO series 1 disco is one of the last breed of "cars" that dont rely on loads of lectrickery things to go wrong so they suit the DIY mechanic cause they is "simple". :D

I've noticed too that there are more off-road goodies for the disco 1 - though with the disco 2's price coming down owners may be more willing to `play' with them - so range of disco2 goodies may start to increase

I agree, you only need a hammer & screwdriver to fix it :) oh and some gaffa tape...

Exactly. In fact the complete tool list for a Disco 1 is...

1. A Hammer
2. A Big Screwdriver
3. A Bigger Hammer
4. A Grinder
5. An even bigger Hammer
6. A welder
7. A bigger Wallet.....

:D:D

Sorry not wanting to disagree or start a slanging match but you both fogot the main item in a tool box

WD40

If it doesn't move and should

I wanted a vehicle I could fix, take under / over / through / round water with no leccy gizmo's and 3 years ago D2's were way over D1 price's
especially the price I paid for elmer on eBay

I would have got a series if it were not for poor mpg, the d1 does 30 which I'm not too embarrassed to admit to anyone. It's also about as easy to tinker with as a series, big boys toys really.

Oh that and they are pretty cheap :)

Heavy duty alternative I agree, but some things you want to save

its impossible to be gentle, with a 9 inch grinder

In all seriousness. I gave up trying to undo suspension/Steering nuts and bolts etc a long time ago. The amount of effort and bleeding knuckles just isn't worth it. A 4" angle grinder and a local Nut & Bolt specialist are my tools of choice.. :D

Thats why I love my Disco. Back in 2002, business was booming and I very foolishly bought a Brand new BMW 530 Sport with every conceivable extra, it cost me £55k I still have it but it does 16 mpg. Its worth about 4k but nobody wants to buy it......I wonder why...

There's probably about the same number of Disco 1s and 2s on the roads. There seems to be as many, maybe more, posts on Disco2 problems. Maybe its because over time, the Disco1 issues have all been encountered and are now "known" issues which people search for, or just know about, or have already been fixed.

"The Disco1 issues have all been encountered"
Correct encountered in the RRC days before the D1 and before internet forums, how did we survive :) because we could read workshop manuals and our mechanical skills. :D

sorry but you missed the two most important items from tool box cable ties and tow rope ooooow and chewing gum to stop all the oils from landing on the drive

For me its cheap motoring.

Got my 1st D1, a 200Tdi J plate just over 7 years ago for £2300.

Its now got 227000 miles on the clock, has been abused and maintained to within an inch of its life, done high speed (its all relative) runs from Pembs to Scotland, towed 3 ton trailers all over the country, offroad 3/4 times a week, school run duties, etc etc etc and all on veg oil (about 70K in my ownership)

It sits on standard springs with 235.85R16 Cooper STT's, winch bumper and winch, all the carpets stripped out, R380 box, and thats about it.

Recently decided to get something a bit nicer to take over the road miles and too last another 7 years, so a 1996 300Tdi Jap import was got last summer. 37K on the clock and all the toys inc full leather for £2k.

Now the 200 sits on a modified policy with Frank Pickles for £83 a year and does all the rougher stuff keeping the 300 as nice. Planning a twin tank set up to run the 300 on WVO and maybe even start running the 200 on waste engine oil.

THAT is why the D1's are more popular.
