Hi all been away for a while and I decided to mentally torture myself again. So got a 90 with the 2.4 in it. Yes the torture has begun today stopped in for diesel today had 1/4 a tank filled it up and it decided it wouldn’t fire up had to be towed home. Cranks over no probs. Runs when it’s towed but as the clutch goes to the floor it’s dead why oh why on earth do we do it. Any suggestions appreciated Graham.

If you don't touch the clutch and just change up/down by rev-matching does it keep running?

Drove from Falmouth to Lowestoft with no clutch once, in an Audi it’s not just a LR thing:D.

Don’t make the same mistake again is all I can say:).

Have a drink and sleep it will all be fine in the morning:).

So do you have 2 issues.

1. the clutch has no pedal.
2. The engine runs if tow started but not on the starter.

Its possible that the battery is low, and the draw from the starter is leaving nothing for the engine management system / fuel injectors / h.p. fuel pump etc. First step is to check the charge state of the battery.

Hi the battery is good brand new 120 amp 12 volt it’s looking like the immobiliser is kicking in. Why oh why did I go back to defenders. I believe there is a bypass so here is another dilemma.

Need to get this clear; when you say it runs when towed, do you mean you can bump start it and the engine runs? And despite the battery being new, have you checked what voltage is in it now?

Transits were known for fuel delivery problems, priming of the high pressure pump, try taking the fuel cap off to see if breather problem

No it doesn’t actually start turns over enthusiastically. Regards the voltage of the battery I will use a voltmeter today. The immobiliser is our best guess. Although my friend suggested a sensor on the crank shaft I’m off today so will mess around with it a bit. Battery at 13.72.
It immediately wouldn’t start after I fuelled up.

Okay so when towing it in Gear it doesn’t actually fire and run, the engine just turns over. Well obviously it would do that as the gears are connected to the engine….. that isn’t the same as actually ‘running’

Why didn’t you just say that from the beginning?

first thing it to have codes read to see if they point you towards a specific fault rather than just assume and throw parts at it. It might not be the immobiliser.

Ok sorry should have explained that a bit better,so it’s ****ing rain in bonnie Scotland am droont, it started and run there turned it off same again. Cranks over but won’t fire up.
I won’t be throwing anything at it it’s a pile of tata junk but I won’t be beaten. Well not yet anyway.

Process of elimination has begun. Battery checked and good fuel filter changed. All fuses and relays checked cleaned and replaced. Codes will be checked this evening will update later.

If you changed the fuel filter, have you purged the air out? There's a thread I started a couple of years back, in the engines forum, under tdci. Its on the second page and worth a read.
