Recently and getting more often when i pull up at the lights the disco (Auto 2001) seems to still want to push but does so in a buffering/jerking manner.
Im slowing up in 'D' approaching the lights applying the brake's and the car seems to be fighting it, pushing to go, eventually the car stops rolling but the engine revs drop slightly as she is just trying to push still.

Im sure this is easily explained


Another question to all auto owners, do you engage P at the lights or sit in D with ya foot on the brake, I guess this wears the brake?


Any thoughts much appreciated

easy... yer brakes is knackered!

I just leave mine (300 auto) in drive or 2/3 at the lights unless i'm sat for ages...
Have you checked the fluid level?

Just last week my mates x type Jag had the same symptions he has got it back from the garage today now fitted with a recon gearbox.

I aways sit at the lights in D always have done without any probs, but to be correct you should move to N and apply the hand brake which do in a long traffic jam. No undue wear on the brakes as you are not moving
I may be wrong but I dont think the pump works in P as there was a warning in the RRC handbook to move from P to N if you are letting the engine tickover.

Thanks guys, i have recently got into the habit of sitting in P.

As far as knackered brakes only did these 20k miles ago discs and pads, it feels like gear box to me not releasing when wheels are turning really slowly, happens at its worst if im slowing from say 50 mph to zero at junctions etc, feels like gear box is still running at speed and wants to keep pushing giving this slight juddeering feeling.

Would changing the oil in the box help, its done 95K and box oil was changed 25k miles ago?

As a D2 auto gearbox is controlled electronicly the ECU can be pluged in and read.

On a D1 the fluid/filter should changed every 24,000mls.
Have a look here and give them a call I believe they are very helpfull. Ashcroft Transmissions

I find the car is more comfortable if you select P or N at traffic lights rather than leaving it in D. If you leave in D you will use slightly more fuel.

Surely the ECU is meant to cancel out any real torque when at idle, my 300 tdi auto sits very patiently when stopped, although if on the level I took my foot off the brake it would creep forward, but that is standard with all autos. I would think that your 'neutral' switch on the gearbox was faulty as this controls the revs when at idle, even when in drive.

Acording to the owners manual you need to select 'N' when you are stopped at lights or for long periods. It gives better fuel economy and puts less strain on the box and brakes.
