Hello, I have a 1988 90 V8 with a LT77 transmission that is very whiney in 1st 2nd and 3rd in my opinion the bearings are tired and the trans needs a refurb..

Any recommendations who to send it to and what the cost would be to exchange for a refurbished one. I live in the NW..

Thanks Neil

So expensive then...its 8 hours labour, allegedly, to do this...so thats £400 right away just for the in/out. ( Other areas may vary but £40 + Vat is ''reasonable''..eek).

Add half a grand for the box...and then lie down and cry.

Wow. Ashcroft do a same day fitting service inc in price that's service!! Was thinking more like £450 + Fitting.. Looks like is going to cost a bit more than expected!! Wonder if there is anyone in the NW that offers a similar service?

Where in northwest are you ?

I can drop the box out and put it on a trailer if wanted, theres a few garages round me that'll refurb

That is for them to do the change out

Box 445quid, 55 quid shipping with a 200 quid refunded on a rebuild able box.

So 700 quid in all to your post code then return your old box and get 200 quid back if they can rebuild it

it is if you read the whole thing.......:)

Ashcroft seem to be way to go for sure I will talk to my mechanic Monday to see what his installation costs are.. Would you say £400 removal and installation would be reasonable to do the job or more?

If you cant take it out yourself you're at the mercy of the local cowboys, erm, i mean mechanics!

Look, Land Rover take over £100 + Vat an hour...

So if you can buy a recon box for 400-500 and get it done locally for 400 you've saved a little, not a lot...but at least you will have a guarantee from Ashcrofts..for your grand!

Taking out a box is about a half day job including tea breaks, do it yourself.

All you'll need is some spanners, sockets and an allen key wrench depending on the bellhousing bolts

taking it out is the easy part as you know. Putting it back in is the hard part as you know , how many months has it been?????

Got mine back in, took just over an hour once I had the correct tool for the job.

Cut input shaft is the best method then slowly work it tighter with the bolts giving it a wiggle before sliding them fully together. Job done.

Transfer box went on yesterday in about the same time if not less, all I had to do was remove the dowel on the transfer and the peg on the gearbox to make it fit up, so fcuk all time really

Considering I don't have any drive shafts to connect up to as I need to measure up for custom lengths with wide angle hardys thats a bit of a moot point is it not ?

Should take about 20 mins to remove the prop bolts at any rate, 7/16th IIRC, brake is on but need a new cable which wont take long to hook up either given that its just a peg

nothing special just good 6pt sockets, good spanners and depending on how strong you are either an engine hoist or gearbox cradle plus axle stands.

I removed the series one by myself, just put a ratchet strap round it and over my shoulders then lifted it up and away but on lt77 you can split it and remove in two goes, take off x'fer first then main box
