What mods have you got mate?

Nothing too major bud, I've had it remapped for extra torque low down the rev range for towing which is brilliant, straight through exhaust which does little for bhp, but allows the turbo to spool up much faster and really does increase torque low down I can pull 25mph in 5th with a trailer load of logs on the road! (I've drilled out the studs on the original centre box so I sometimes put that back on with a couple of stainless bolts and nuts if doing long distances as it can be very 'drony'), also blanked the egr off at the exhaust manifold end with a sliver of ally, so will go through mot because its all still there but just not allowing warm gases into the inlet, and a new standard IC as the old one was leaking and very ragged around the edges, I couldn't afford a full size one at the time, but looking to fit one in the near future! Although not a mod, I overhauled both axles and replaced discs, calipers and pads all round, and I always make sure the handbrake is just on with the last two clicks as that way I know I'm not losing any gains through binding brakes or anything! I also replace the (standard) air filter every 2500 miles and this makes a big difference on overall economy and is inexpensive! I could do more but as I use it everyday I need reliability first and foremost, and she does the job I need her to very well! :)

Pretty much what I did to my disco, td5 goes well with just a mild map don't it :) can't wait to fettle the defender

Absolutely mate, I've no idea how people drive the defender with the standard map and are happy with it, low down its gutless!!

Quite happy with mine tbf even after the disco with stage 1. But I ain't towed with it yet....it is a slow ****er though :D

Landrovers were never really about speed. And there is nowhere in the UK where it is legal to go faster than 70mph on the road, or 60 towing a trailer.

Prob why I'm quite happy with the speed. I know theyre slow so expect no more lol.

Would like more pull though as just bought a caravan and want the engine to be under less stress hence the planned remap. I don't like having to dog the engine to keep up with traffic or get out of a junction

I'm.not bothered about speed either, I rarely go above 55 mph at all in the Landy.

That wasn't really my point I regards to them being sluggish as standard, the 200 and 300 tdi's have more low down grunt than a standard td5 map, up to a certain number of revs, I think land rover really got it wrong in standard form, you also have to rev it out almost like a petrol to get going on hills etc, which imo is not what having a diesel is about, thatsaid, with the mildest of maps its character changes dramatically.

Couldn't agree more with that! 55mph is ok, 60 you watch your fuel disappear and lose your fillings  talk about remaps and people think you're a boy racer :p
I think the euro 3..? Emissions standards had a lot to do with td5 being choked

Indeed, bt there is no need to make getting up to those speeds so dramatically difficult, which I why land rover lost out to alot of the jap stuff in the 80's and 90's, I mean its simply ridiculous that they kept the 2.25 in continuation for so long....

Generally, I hear about more problems caused by too much power than too little. Most modern cars are designed to do over 100mph.
Modern road conditions often mean not much more than walking pace.
Which means that the vehicles spend most of their time at idling speed, or at a few thousand rpm. Which is why the Diesel Particulate Filters clog up.

Just out of interest, why do you need to get to those speeds quickly?
I used to tow all over the place with a 2.25, and with my 2.5TD. Never used to bother me, so long as I could do 56 mph on the open road.
On minor roads, I would often only be doing a few mph anyway, to avoid throwing the beasts in the back around.

I loved towing with my V8 Disco, but I never used to go any faster. The reason ot was much less stressful was due to the autobox.

I don't need to get to those speeds quickly, its less stressful, easier to pull out of junctions and get up to the speed limit so its easier joining busier roads full loaded.
Its not about the speed as already stated, more about torque. Its nice being able to stay in 5th or drop down to 4th, where a 2.25 would be in 1st. We've used both, and Mid Wales is hilly!
Alot of diehards say they like the old 2.25 or the 2.5 na, but in reality, they are truly horrendous engines and extremely dated, and woefully underpowered and lacking hugely in torque.
My ideal would be a 3.5 v8, but I couldn't afford the fuel as an everydayer! Although it would make me smile!

Yeah those dpf's are a PITA. Hear loads about those causing problems

I never used to worry about that stuff much either. The oncoming drivers have brakes. :D

My V8 was the 3.9. You should try one. V8 Auto Disco is the bees knees for towing. And the fuel economy isn't as bad as people make out, because you don,t have to thrash it, even with a trailer on.

Haha there is that! I guess a big steel trailer and chipper kinda makes people use their brakes!! :D

Yeah the idea of a nice old v8 makes me salivate, I've actually got one at home awaiting some work and a vehicle to put it in, maybe it'll go back in the rangie if ever finish it!

I have fond memories of sitting in the passenger seat next to my old man in his 2 door v8 pulling out a Christmas steel lorry that had wedged itself in a drainage gully, amazing! That one incident is pretty much what got me hooked, and I was only 8 or 9!! :)

Hi All,
According to the handbook my RR has a supercharged version of the Jaguar 4.2-litre V8 developing 400 hp. Impressive number perhaps but all I know is from a standing start you hit 60 mph very quickly indeed. Well done Land Rover for actually getting it into the car and making it stay there when you kick down the fast pedal because you certainly know there is something very growly under the hood. For the record, don't even think about mpg, it's pointless. Just enjoy the ride.
Tricky.
