'Scuse me venting here, but who frickin designed the freelander???? Just did an oil change this weekend, the first since buying the motor. Whats with the amount of dismantling to access the drain plug?!?!?!?!?:crazy::wtf:

Not to mention the £92 I was stung for two things of oil and a filter. Sheesh!!!

Right. Vent over. I feel a lot better now. Honest.

Yo! Did have a look on here at the suggestions to make it a bit easier, thanks. Was feeling a bit misled after checking out Haynes.....which said something along the lines of "unclip the undertray"!! A few spanners and an hour later it appears they were lying to me ha ha!!!!!

I don't believe you. Haynes wouldn't do that...

A Haynes book of lies would in no way be misleading...

I can assure you it's all true. Was devasted that such a british institution could feed me SUCH A PILE OF CRAP. Ahem.
 
if yu do a :search: on here - or pm NI, there are a couple of mods - one of which is to allow acces to the oil filter without removing the tray - mite even be in the Q's and A's bit.
 
Cheers mate. What a scutter to change the oil!!! Will have to have a proper peek at the ideas.......when I'm not raging, fuming and cursing haynes that is!!!!

Appreciate your frustrations here LaraKitten, but the Freelander is no different to most 4x4 in that the undertray has to be removed to do such things. Better this than a hole in the sump.

Don't consider leaving it off as its part of the limited airodynamics and is also a structural component on the Freelander, which lacks a chassis.

'Who frickin designed this' that's something I ask myself time and time again.

Removing the undertray is a complete mare, it doesn't get any quicker or easier no matter how many times you do it.

Why did you buy two thingys of oil? Pretty steep, get some 10w40 semi synthetic from your local motor factors.

I can't help thinking you've chosen the wrong vehicle. If you're stressed about an oil change, what are you going to do when the VCU siezes, the rear subframe shifts, the IRD fails, the turbo hoses blow out, the windows fall down, the clutch fails, the fuel pumps play up, the warning lights begin to flash etc etc etc etc etc.

I feel your pain - just changed the oil on mine - my the mod to the undertray was to simply cut a hole in it where the sump plug is - no flaps or anything complicated, but even getting the oil filter out as resulted in scraped knuckles!
But if you've a late model TD4 just wait until you've the fuel filter to change - now that is a tw@t!:mad:
