Steam looks 'light' in the air and dissipates quick;y but unburnt fuel smoke is thicker and hangs around if thats any help.

You can smell the difference

Yea it's not steam definitely smoke and could not really say there is any smell to it just been out in in and on start up got smoke arrived at destination and all fine about 30 mins away.
