Thanks, that's really useful to know. I was told that if it was the turbo then there would be lots of oil in the inter-cooler and pipework which would need to be cleaned out. The garage said removing the inter-cooler was a big job and they were quoting me in the region of £650 for an exchange turbo and around £500 labour to do everything.

I would imagine changing the turbo would be within the realms of my ability but would there not be a need to use electronic gear to check or reset boost pressure etc?

the turbo is simple bolt on job, it's factory calibrated you just have to put it there...i'm with electronics not some spanner man and managed to fit one alone....see attachment(i'd say max 1 hour for a skilled mechanic)

Thank you very much for this help sierrafery, did you have to clean out oil from the intercooler?

How long did it take you to do the job from start to finish? Im starting to worry about the prices I have been quoted :(

my turbo didnt have problems with the seals to loose oil, i didnt like the sound of it and i replaced it with a new one.... as about the intercooler, i replaced it too with a larger one.... took me about 1.5 hours the turbo alone and around 2 hours the intercooler(this one not alone)... without proffesional tools ... and the beer on the rocker cover:D
