Greetings everybody,

Our TD5 is making this weird noise, it kind of used to always be there, very discrete, but it now got super loud, and gets noisier the faster I rev.

If I disengage the clutch, it disappears instantly, which obviously drives me thinking it is something related to the gearbox. Oil level is correct.

What do you think it could be ? This sound is pretty peculiar, surely you folks can tell what it is ...

Hope it's not too bad. Thank you so much for your help.

Cheers

Not sure one a td5 and not a long enough clip to tell but it sounds fairly similar to what I had when gearbox mainshaft bearing failed on my 200tdi with an lt77. I am sure someone with more knowledge of these newer electronic models will be along shortly

I think your diagnostic is correct. Definitely a gearbox bearing. Got to search which one now, I guess I should lift the whole vehicle to find out where the noise comes from exactly.

After investigating properly (sorry I didn't even bother opening the bonnet initially as I felt so confident about the state of the engine, and it was pretty late in the evening), it appears the noise comes around the power steering pump. But it's pretty hard to locate with precision.

Yes, the power steering pumps do deteriorate on these. If that's what it is, they're not too hard to swap.

Here is an extra video where the noise is more flagrant. Feels like belt and pulleys renewal is required. What do you think?

I think it's most difficult to publicly share Google Drive files without authentication ....

A listening stick is your friend here.
I use a bamboo garden cane with a cone on the end to pick up and amplify the noise from whatever you touch.

That noise is not the belt, it is one of the bearings on their way out.
Remove fan belt and run engine, not for to long, if noise stops then you know its on the front of the engine, with belt off and engine stopped spin each pulley by hand.

The dodgy pulley eventually snapped yesterday... Hopefully only a few km away from home. Belt went nuts and ended teared apart.
Ordered parts yesterday, got delivered today. All fixed. Didn't remove the fan (couldn't anyway). Sounds smooth again :)
