Ive got a 1998 discovery witha 300tdi engine, for a while now ive noticed what can only be described as a high pitch whistle coming from the engine when im setting off and changing gear at about 3000rpm. Has anyone got any ideas as to whats wrong and how i fix it ?

could be fanbelt (serpentine) could be air being drawn in try checking pipes from intercooler to inlet manifold etc alterator squeek pow3er steering pump or belt the list is virtualy endless. if you pick the bonnet up and stick your head under while someone gives the engine a bit of clog you might be able to find out that way just keep your hands away from any moving parts .

Thanks very much Lyron, i will try that as soon as this dam rain stops and i can get my wife to venture outside. I live in Mossley a small town 10 miles from Manchester. I will let u know how we get on. Once again thanks for the reply.

yes especiallly when pulling the van, the disco really drops off when on the motorway going uphill. Do u think blanking off the EGR would help ?

blanking egr is a good idea ,hot gases and oil cokes manifold, put a blank tin gasket in between egr valve and manifold ,still looks like egr fitted but doesnt work and any loss of boost stopped
