Hi, hoping for a bit of advice. I've had my mk1 TD4 auto a few months, done a few thousand miles in it to bring it up to about 66k. Had the crankshaft pulley replaced in Nov but other than that it's been mostly ok.

Last week driving up the M1 I noticed a new sound coming from somewhere up front, sort of whirring/whining noise. Stepson reckons it sounds like quiet 'spokies' on a pushbike. I reckon it sounds more like a hand-cranked WW2 air raid siren before it's got up to speed... It hasn't got worse in 200 miles driving since then and you can easily drown it out with the stereo but obviously that's not a long-term solution.

Sound only starts from about 10mph when driving, nothing when stopped in P or N and revving engine (does come on when rolling downhill in N and revving). Increases in pitch with revs and changes accordingly when you change gear up or down. Only stops again when you come to a halt.

So - any ideas?? Thanks!

Does it change with engine speed or engine speed? Any excess smoke? Can you hear roughly where it's comming from? I would check turbo hoses first but hard to diagnose a sound without hearing it

Yes, it changes with engine speed. The pitch gets higher as whatever is causing it seems to speed up too. Seems to get louder with engine braking but the pitch slows down.

Haven't noticed any excess smoke.

It's odd that nothing happens when I rev away in neutral if the vehicle's not moving.

I'm gonna take it to local back street garage next week and see what they say. I can't really tell where it's coming from apart from somewhere up front (not particularly left or right side as far as I can tell).

I have had a similar problem, where mine made a quiet ticking noise which sounded like it was coming from below the centre console.

I initally thought it was the IRD, then I thought it could be inner CV joints.

Turns out it is the handbrake cable catching on the hub and the sound is travelling up the chassis.

The noise disappears when I drive with the handbrake slightly on. so tomorrow I am sorting it.

Hope it is something really simple :)

When it stalls does it feel as though the handbrake is on? Causing the hippo to come to a stop and stall?

The day I bought mine I reversed on full lock into a parking space at a motorway service station and stalled my auto 3 times.

I replaced my VCU and all is good now.

Stalling is probably a red herring, engine just died first thing a couple of times in the morning. Was fine after going forward 10 yards then reversing.

ive seen alot of people mention reversing with full lock. How do you do that exactly when the vcu controls the 4wd?

Errrr.... you turn the steering to full lock, engage reverse and then drive backwards :D

The viscous part of the VCU tends to get more stiff with age, which engages drive to the back wheels as I understand it, so that instead of being part time 4wd it become more full time 4wd and winds up the IRD and the rear diff. Lots of old school 4x4 can not be driven on the road in 4wd and are not great at turning.

That explains it  thought by full lock you meant 4x4.. been noticing this on mine aswell but not near stalling, just feels like its breakin a bit. The vcu looks new tho, but i just bought it so what do i kmow :(

Go to bell engineering for a recon ird

With work and kids I can't get down to Worcester to swap units over. It's gonna have to be a local job - will speak to the garage about getting a recon unit in.

Anyone want to buy a low mileage mk1? It's getting sold before or after the work's done...

Make sure you advertise it in the for sale section. I'm looking for one for the better half but she is fussy
They do delivery?

Never heard of an auto stalling before , Must have been really tight on full lock

Mine @75k is slightly tight but will go round in circles on full lock at idle with ease , Would this indicate a VCU still in good working order ?

Not for me. I had been driving at motorway speeds for an hour and mine is an auto :D

Sounds okay. Have you done hippos VCU test?
