My freelander has just started to make a whiring noise when accelarating to change gear, then it disappears on the gear change and returns as I start to accelarate. It sounds like the noise you get when your fans are on and is coming from that general direction, i did switch off all the fans so its definately not that. It hasnt yet affected performance but i am concerned that it will turn into something expensive!

Any idea what the problem is?

what injun do you have ? could it be more of a whistling / escaping air sound ? if it's a td4, odds on it's a split intercooler hose.

Great job Optimus, you were spot on. I had a TD4 and when you suggested the inter cooler hose i looked up other peoples problems on this subject and used your advice. I replaced the old one (turned out it was a split hid in the inside of the elbow of the smaller pipe) a £6 replacement and i was sorted. Then checked the larger pipe and noticed it was rubbing on a screw not burst through yet, so took the old pipe, cut it in half and used it with a couple of cable ties to protect the larger one one that was rubbing. Hopefully that will stop that from splitting. Great advice.

The noise has now gone and unless i am imagining it, looks like the mpg has improved.

thanks for the help guys
