Hi all ,on my 300tdi im getting a whinning noise sounds like a failing bearing when the speed hits 50mph it is more noticable but when i take my foot of the gas it stops .ive discounted wheel bearing as this would be constant noise ,diff or transfer box ???? any help would be appriciated.

Does it happen when you are in certain gears?

Mine does this when i'm in fifth gear, again it stops when I take my foot off the accelerator.

Yes im normaly in fourth changing to 5th when noise ocours seems louder in 5th is this normal on discos ? have you had yours checked .ive done the oils on transfer and gearbox and axles so i now thers oil in .Its in garage wednesday so im trying to arm myself with a bit of knowlege.

I'd guess thrust bearing on the clutch or ley shaft bearing...good luck chap...

Cheers for the imput ,are they big jobs to do,ie expensive.would that mean a new clutch.the ley shaft i no nothing about.

To be honest, I cure mine by turning the radio up !, ignorance being bliss!!! It only happends in 5th on mine, so I hv'nt worried too much about it.

i'd agree with it being clutch bearing - changing is a bit of a pain in the arse. if you don't have a garage and the right tools and lifting kit it is probably easier to pay a garage to do it. but it could possibly last for a good while without causing any problems.

Wunt worry about it

Our's is the same but you can only hear it when you turn the radio down and manage you shut the wife and kids up!!!!
