Hi everyone
My Defender td5 has started with a whining noise when accelerating I have checked the exhaust manifold and some hoses for leaks/splits but can't see any, i took the hose off the turbo and when holding the middle of the small propeller there is movement up/down side to side would this indicate the turbo making the whining noise and on it's way out??? Any comments would be appreciated.

How much movement was there on the turbo and did you check for leaks on the turbo hoses whilst the engine and turbo were underload?

Hi there is about 1mm movement on the propeller it is very close to touching the metal that it's surrounded by, I was looking at the hoses whilst engine was running I had the acoustic cover of the engine top and the shroud around the fan off whilst looking at the hoses, would you suggest a better way of check ??
Regards Robert

There was quite a lot of oil on the part in the picture also.

I had a whistling sound coming from under my bonnet on acceleration. I could only see the leak in the hose when I blasted the engine and the hose swelled up. I'm not sure how much play you can get away with on the Turbo. I'm sure someone will get back to you when they are back from work. I always thought the engine would smoke a little on tickover when turbo's are on there way out. But not sure. When you blast the engine can you hear anything from the Turbo or could it be coming from your transmission. I presume all your gearbox and transfer box oils are OK.

I didn't thunk it would be the transfer/gearbox as it makes this noise while not in gear also may have to do some further investigation!!! Thanks for your reply I will get someone to rev a little harder while I watch the hoses etc.

When you say the whining still happens when not in gear is that when you are stationary or when you are on the move and in neutral? Remember the transfer box is still turning when on the move and in neutral. These questions will help the more knowledgeable when they come on.

Happens when stationary and when travelling in gear, just been to Landrover services and they seem to think it maybe water pump or power steering pump bearings but would have to remove fan belt and strip down parts to find out.
