Somthing on the transmission of my Defender 300 TDI has started whining. Its not coming from the front. Could be middle or back so guessing transfer box or rear diff. Only happens on acceleration. Seems to be getting worse. Any ideas?

If only on acceleration, more likely to be gear/transfer box than rear diff

Sorry, but i don't have much gear box knowledge to suggest where

check the condition of both gear box and transfer box ,you will have to drain some out to check properly, check prop ujs while under there first ,front diff can sound just like its coming from transferbox nearly caught me a few times

I though my gearbox had gone. As mentioned above... Took it to the garage and they diagnosed it as the front diff.

Cheap and decent don't always go hand in hand

often recon diffs on ebay, but couldn't say if they are any good - around the £175 mark

Otherwise you're looking a bearmach or allmakes recon- around £400 - they should be ok if decent bearings used, but can be hard to tell

It will be 10 or 24 spline

Think older ones were 10, newer 24.

Don't know if microcat would help

Easiest way (for front CV) - just remove dust cap and count - unless i'm wrong about their being splines both ends:eek:

is only inner diff end that differs 10 or 24 (apart from cv to halfshat which are either 23 or 33),pull a rear half shaft out unless one axles been changed
