Hello friends, Today should have been a good day with the eventual replacement of the crumbling 110 rear crossmember. But as these things go all is not well. After the welder had fitted the new crossmember and as I set off there was a significant whining noise from over my left shoulder. It remains while driving although there doesn’t appear to be any impact on the running. From what I’ve been reading as I scan for the potential source, the fuel pump and/or it’s straining to deliver fuel is a most likely culprit. The welder had advised I let the fuel go low in anticipation of his work beginning and, he notably mentioned he had to put some diesel in in order to get it running after the start. If there is a problem with the fuel, given the tank refitting, what is the chance of it being an easy fix? Will a “ purging” of the system be a cure?

Hello,

Is it a whining sound like a pump running dry?

Never owned a diesel or ran out while driving one, but i know they need priming if you've ran out.

So you might need to prime it?

Whining over your left shoulder? Is it your wife or girlfriend? Or is it your wallet whining because it's been abused?
When the tank was removed, all the years of 'sediment' will have been disturbed, shaken up and suspended in the remaining fuel.
I would be inclined to start at the fuel tank and work your way forward from there, changing or cleaning all of the filters in the system.
Then come back and let us know how you got on.

So, firstly, thank you to those that took the trouble to reply. However, it turns out that the damage was done in the refitting, or more specifically when the fuel tank was been removed and a fuel line was fractured. Unfortunately, this was known to the culprit who had decided not to mention it whenever I collected the defender. But, admitted it when I returned the next morning with a complaint. Judging by his response it would seem he’s likely to reluctantly repair the problem with anything less than the cheapest option. Aren’t garages just the greatest.
