Around 4 Weeks ago started to imagine I was hearing a slight whine when lifting off the gas or when going downhill, fine when accelerating, braking or going uphill. After a couple of weeks got louder till was almost a screech. Only around a hundred miles or so later, Seemed to be coming from under foot/front end. Could feel a slight vibration coming from underfoot in the cab when lifting off the gas. Steering fine, no pulls of stiffness. Gearbox functioning correctly. No errors at all.
Started to dig on forums as to what would cause, firstly oil levels. Here I have to admit ignorance/stupidity. Didn’t realise the transfer box had separate fill to the gearbox.
So front diff, 200 ml of oil required. Gearbox full as I would expect as had changed oil last year. Transfer box. Drained out 1 lt of oil and filled up 2.3 lt of ep90, Back diff, none required.
Problem still there. So over the past 2 weekends have removed the transfer box, replaced with a known good one. Greased and checked back and front prop shafts and universal joints. Front one seemed to be quite new with the black coating still on it. No play in any of the joints.
All back together again and noise still there Ahhhrrrrr…..
Help!
Is all I am left with Front Diff?
Can I take the front prop shaft out altogether and test by driving to see if the noise is still there?
Or will this cause damage.
Any comments or suggestions appreciated

In the short term you can remove the front Prop and run rear drive only....not for extended periods as it may shag the VCU in the transfer box...but it can be done.

It could be the Gearbox as well...you seem to discount that...why so?

Transfer box needs transmission fluid NOT EP 90. Noise on overrun is more than likely than not diff pinion bearings.

I han't discounted the Gearbox, only thinking was that the speed that the issue has accelerated at, would point to some kind of bearing or joint. Also don't want to think about gearbox removal. Sound more painful than the transfer box.

Thanks. On the Transfer box fluid, only changed it to EP90 as have read that this is better. Should I get it out of there and replace with regular transmission fluid?

Do you believe everything you read? Stipulated oil for Borge Warner transfer box is transmission fluid. There is a little pump in there that maybe wondering what the hell has hit it. EP 90 in older gear train transfer box's.

Well I do now you have said so. Will get that out of there. The Diff pinion bearings, guessing that is Diff out completly and strip down? would Part Number be STC2808 be correct or is there a kit to do any required seals as well.

Yeah they are them. Unless you know what you are doing setting the diff up is not a simple job. You can't just strip it change bearings and stick it back together, there are settings to do. Take a look at Island 4x4 for bits.

If you remove the propshafts where they bolt on to the diffs then check bearings by rotating and feeling for play rather than Assuming before you shell out money .

Yeah he could do that. But noise on overrun like a bearing winding down will be pinion bearings.

Front or back we won't know nor will he:p

Well at a rough guess, if the noise is coming from the back it will be the rear one, if it's coming from the front it will more than likely be the front one. But as i say that's only a rough guess. :D:D

But mostly its under the seat , where noises appear from in most of lz's cases :)

Yea ok wammers your missing the point ! Don't worry ;)

I am not missing the point at all. If you have the experience you can listen and 9 times out of 10 locate and diagnose the problem. If you don't have the nous the only time you will know something is wrong, with say a wheel bearing, is when the wheel falls off. Simples.

Lol the point is... If your not Mechanically minded every noise is underneath the seat

Yeah i know what you are saying, trying to sort a problem on here sometimes from the descriptions of "I know sod all about mechanics of Orpington" is a little difficult to say the least. :):)
