Hi

I have just had some major work done to my 1999 TD5 Defender.
I have had new clutch plates / thrust washer & flywheel installed.
There was always a whining noise which came from the clutch / gearbox.
To explain.........
Particularly when the engine is cold, when I select a gear after depressing the clutch, I get this horrible whining / dragging sound from somewhere down under. When I release the clutch and drive, it goes. When I depress the clutch and select another gear, it comes back. It seems to gradually become less and less as the engine and gearbox warms up.

I am ****ed off, as I have just had all this work done, and it obviously hasn't sorted the problem out.

Any ideas?????

Thanks in advance

if noise occurs when pedals half way ie goes when pedal is fully depressed on up ,its spigot bush in crank

don't worry about had it on mine for years from cold no problem changed it when I did the clutch.
ah well do it next time

Always should change them when the gearbox is being removed and re-fitted.

Mine is noisey too for the last year or so since the previous owner replaced the clutch, flywheel, pressure plate and release bearing while getting the gearbox rebuilt but he didn't know about the spigot bearing.

The gearbox sh!t itself the other day on me though so now I'll replace the bush but otherwise, I'd just leave it be until a new clutch is needed.

Taking off the transfer and gearbox and removing the clutch is an awful lot of work just to replace a spigot bearing if that's all that's needed

It won't do any harm other than the annoying noise when cold in the mornings etc.
