Hi
A whining noise has recently started from the back of my FL1, starts about 65Mph and gets worse at 70, if I gas it it gets louder, if I ease off it quietens down and if I drop the clutch it also quietens down so I don't think it is tyres.
I have Infinity inf-100's on the rear.

Any ideas?
 
do you have the same tyres on the front ????????? sounds like a bit of wind up 2 me .....if you are running different tyres front and rear ..or even new and old front and rear ................
 
it could be something else but first as last GET THE SAME TYRES FRONT AND REAR.......before you do tho measure from the tarmac to the top of the tread on the fronts and the rears ..get a short length of batton/timber hold it flat on the tread on top of the tyres so it sticks out past the wheel face and measure to the UNDERSIDE of it ....front then rear ..if theres a difference you could have a ****ed vcu or ird ...but first as last them tyres need to be the same as they WILL cause wind up ....change them and try it before going in any deeper .post your measurements ..bet they are more than 20mm different .....hope this helps
 
Ta for the suggestion, done that and front and rear are coming in at approx 655mm so no big differences there.
 
im surprised at that i must say ..........................different age tyres of the same make usually differ by 10-20 mm ..let alone different makes and tread patterns ........think your vcu bearings could be shot .....go under neath and check theres no splits or cracks in the rubber bushes holding the bearings in ....and give the vcu a good shake see iff theres excess play in the bearings and bushes holding it to the underneath of the vehicle ....that dont cost nothing either !!!!!!! lol
 
Just went out in the cold and dark and got underneath, all looks and feels ok.
I've only had this FL a few weeks, the one before I had for 4 weeks before it went back... getting a bit pi##ed off now...
I guess I'll have to talk to the garage that I got it from... again....

starting with easiest and cheapest fix and working down:-

1. Rub hand around inside of rear tyres, is there a saw tooth pattern, if so this can cause a whine
2. check the temperature of the VCU after driving a few miles, if its warm radius if tyres aren't the same.
3. wheel bearing
4. could be diff bearings

They look Ok to me, what d o you think?
 
easiest way to check if itys tyres is just to swap them rear to front. if the noise moves, its the tyres. It wont cause any probs for the short time you will be running them.

Take pics across the surface of the tyre, not straight on.
 
If you look at the inside edge of the tyre below, you can see that the right hand side of the blocks are higher than the lhs of each block - this is what we are talking about. This is a pic of an (ex) rear tyre from my slitty - at about 60mph it sound like a Stuka on full chat :eek:.

Took it to local tyre dealer and he said that although the tyres are cheapies they have very good wear patterns and won't be causing the noise.
Then took it to the garage I bought it from and the mechanic jumped in and we went for a listen, he thinks it is the diff and suggested an oil change which is gonna get done next Wed.
Now I'm no expert but I doubt changing the oil will stop the noise, if a bearing has worn then fresh oil isn't going to fix it... or am I wrong?
 
OK, had a new diff fitted and it still whinned like a bast##rd, so the garage did various tests and is 100% certain it is the tyres, I said "Ok, I don't mind putting some tyres on but if it still does it are you gonna pay for them?", he said "Yes"... so now looking for some good and quite tyres, going to be a challange to find some over the holiday period though.....
Any suggestions, Marshall's seem to come up quite often, any good?
