Hi all,

I just swapped out my fluids today to Red Line everything. I've got a '93 200tdi 110. I went with MTF this time to see how it would fare. Shifts great, but I now seem to have a slight whine coming from either the gear box or transfer case that correlates with speed. It's not major in unlocked high gear, but much more noticeable in low gear or locked diff. Any suggestions on what this could be? Would it have anything to do with the MTF? Hopefully it's not an issue with my TC or gear box itself.

Thanks!

So I looked into that before I changed the oils and the general consensus was that the GL4 vs GL5 debate is mostly a thing of the past as modern GL5 doesn't wear on bronze components like the oils of the past. While technically EP90 (GL4) is cited in the manual, plenty of people say they run GL5 in the LT230 without issue and even Ashcroft says you can run either in the LT230...so not sure what to think. I'm not opposed to the idea of switching back to a GL4, but I'd hate to literally just throw away $50 worth of oil.

I did some more digging and it could also be the input bearing for the Tcase?

Well I certainly wouldn't argue with Ashcroft, if they say do it then OK. BUT something has obviously changed, you just have to ask yourself what.:D
